Description

Learn elementary Japanese words at your own pace!
GENKI Vocab for 3rd Ed. is an app that enables users to learn more than 1,200 words essential for beginners.

This is the official iPhone app for the 3rd edition of GENKI: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese, a best-selling series of Japanese learning materials boasting more than 2 million copies sold worldwide.

Advantages
◆Users can view the words and listen to the recordings as they like, enabling them to study at their own pace.
◆By repeating a process of memorization and self-checking, learners can firmly master important beginning-level vocabulary.
◆Words already memorized are progressively removed from the study set, so users can concentrate on just the words that challenge them, making for a more efficient approach to learning.

Study methods and functions
This app has three main modes: Study, Check, and List.

◇ "Study" allows users to view the words, their meanings, and the example sentences over and over, so they can take their time learning.
・Audio recordings of all words and example sentences are provided with natural pronunciations by native speakers of Japanese. (Please set your iPhone to Ring mode to hear the audio playback.)
・Fun illustrations help users to better retain the words studied.
・Users can bookmark the words they like. The bookmarked words are compiled in the Bookmark list in "List."

◇ “Check” helps learners to track their mastery.
・Users check their understanding of the vocabulary studied and sort the words into those mastered and those not yet retained.
・The words already mastered are taken out of the study set, leaving behind just those that still need to be worked on.

◇ “List” displays a list of all words covered by the app so that users can see their progress and review the vocabulary.
・The list can be arranged in any of three orderings: lesson order, a-i-u-e-o order, and alphabetical order. The words bookmarked in the Study mode are also listed in the Bookmark list.
・Checkmarks are automatically placed next to words that have been mastered.
・The Study view of words can be displayed from the list entries, enabling quick review.

○This app is based on the vocabulary from the third edition of GENKI.

BestMaggot,
It is worth it overall.
When I say it is worth it, I mean the app itself. It is much better than writing thousands of flashcards either from making them or the purchase of them (the paper and time to write the flash cards with minimal mistake.) in the long run, it is alright. I left out one star out of the five because of the price. It is too expensive. Some other reviews mentioned that this app should be free - especially with the purchase of the book. I agree to some degree. But if there has to be a price, I still don’t think it should be that expensive.

Comparing to other reviews I’ve seen, at least some of the additional vocabulary IS in the flashcards. It’s just that the flashcards for each set is what should be known for that lesson. The additional vocab is for one, additional, but just not required YET. What I mean is, at least some of that earlier additional vocab is indeed covered in this Genki app, just in a later set.
There is also sound, example sentences, and the cards are scrambled nicely every time. I like it.

Good Vocab Practice
I gave it a 4 because it took me forever to figure out how the audio worked. Make sure you are on Ringer Mode. If your phone is on silent the audio does not work. Other than that it helps with practicing basic Vocab.
Mobile Holmes,
Yes there are sentence examples and sound
Just a note—Some of the reviews state the app (3rd addition) no longer has sentence examples, but it still does. You just have to click the caret (upward arrow) at the bottom of each study card to switch to the full sentence. The examples are shown in English & Japanese with Japanese audio for the whole sentence.
Gabbyeva,
No Sound
Using this app on an iPhone 8 for supplemental studying for my 日本語 class. Cool idea if the sound worked.

Update: found a reviewer that mentioned that your silence button has to be off for the sound to work. Now that the sound works, it’s a great app.

Helpful and easy to use
This app is very helpful for studying along with the text book, and I have my flash cards wherever I go. I use an iPhone 11 and haven’t had any issues with the sound so far.
Rebekia Krum,
Genki needs to fix the audio so it actually works
It’s uber frustrating to pay for an app and have basically half of its function not even work. Especially when you’re trying to learn how to speak a language. :/ I need to not just see and read Japanese I need to hear it so I can practice. Also, the textbook has places I’m supposed to listen to audio from the app. Again. Not helpful. Just fix it please
Geimon-kon,
2nd edition is much better
In the “updated” app for the 3rd edition textbook they removed the best feature of this app, which is for every flashcard, they also had the vocab word placed in a sentence, which was a terrific tool for listening comprehension and understanding grammar. Even if you are using the 3rd edition, I’d suggest buying the vocab app for the 2nd edition. A few words have changed, but that extra feature makes all the difference in the world.
Miina<3,
One this Missing for me
The only thing missing to me is a spaced repetition function. It be easier to keep track of the things I need to study again.
Shakir o,
Initial audio issues ( but it is fixable !)
Been experiencing the same audio issues as others have mentioned. Once fixed, the app is exactly as you’d expect it to be.

TO FIX AUDIO:
1) make sure your mute button on the left of your phone is turned off so the phone is not silenced.
2) if this doesn’t solve, people recommend closing all apps.

The first step solved it for me, I am really happy this was able to be resolved.

Additional vocabulary missing
I gave it four stars because the additional vocabulary is missing (or I can’t find it).
