PERSONALIZED STUDY:
Set a goal of how many kanji you'd like to learn each day. The app creates a personalized study plan based on what memories you need to strengthen, based on proven learning techniques like spaced repetition.
Kanji you forget will be reviewed more often, while enough correct reviews will fill up its progress ring—which means you won't review it again for a full year. This allows you to maintain progress for hundreds and even thousands of kanji at once, while maintaining a reasonable amount to study each day.
SMARTER REVIEWING:
Get tested on all the common readings for each kanji. Kanji Garden uses vocabulary words made of kanji you've already learned to test in context. Multiple choice answers include commonly confused answers to help you catch your mistakes. Or type in kanji readings to practice Japanese input.
BETTER LEARNING ORDER:
Kanji Garden is built on a simple idea: Learn all the components for a kanji first. When you can break down a character into its components, even kanji with many strokes become easy to recognize. Plus it enables you to take advantage of phono-semantic components that give hints at what the character means, and what it sounds like:

鍵: Key (金:metal + 建:Build)
Here, 建 is a phonetic component. Now you know all three have the same on'yomi ケン (ken)!

I love this app and use it every day.
I really love this app. The only thing I would do differently is give the option to review certain kanji sooner than the scheduled Kanji Garden timeline. There are times where I’m passing reviews but I don’t feel particularly confident. If I was asked to actively recall the readings of these kanji, there are times where I wouldn’t be able to do it but because I’m given the choice between three options, I can usually figure out which one feels right. If there was a system where you needed to type out the reading given a certain word, I feel like I’d have a much stronger association. Overall, this app is great. It has streaks, which are a motivating factor for me. It has scheduled reviews based on when human memory tends to start forgetting things. Overall, the app is virtually perfect for my needs. There are still places where it could exceed expectations though. I’d still highly recommend this app to any new Japanese learner. It’s great. Edit: I realized that there is indeed a setting that allows you to type the readings instead of choosing from three options! I have been loving this app for months and plan on continuing to use it! As soon as I have some disposable income, I’m going to subscribe with the lifetime upgrade. Keep up the good work devs!

Great for ADHD learners!
I have super ADHD. In fact it will probably take me a few hours to write this short review, so it’s difficult for me to find an app that I can stick with, and especially difficult for me to make myself learn through my own means of repetition. This app already has the plan laid out. You’re introduced to new characters, while characters you’ve previously learned are brought back to your attention at set times, and the app is not overcrowded with a bunch of useless words and sentences that nobody would ever actually say.
It shows you animations of how the characters are written, gives you the different readings, example words, and also has audio for the pronunciation. I’m delightfully surprised to find such a well done app, after I’ve spent so many years struggling to find a way that works for me and my ADHD. Thank you, developers!

This app is great. It took me a few days to fully understand how the whole thing (as in the app itself) worked, but once I did it was smooth sailing. There’s no ads, it’s a refreshingly sleek and simple interface, and there’s plenty of information for further learning into the topic. The only things I wish were different would be a more detailed tutorial, and if I could listen to audio clips of more characters/sentences/phrases, just to better understand them and how to pronounce them. Otherwise, 100% solid app, I really appreciate it, and I will probably be purchasing the pro version, just because I don’t want this kind of app to die. It is still completely functional without the pro version, you just unlock the ability to learn more kanji in a day. Anyway, this is a great app, and my gratitude goes out to the devs.

Awesome basic learning tool for self study!
Honestly if you’re committing yourself to finally learning kanji you should have this app apart of your studies! The app is very informative it lets you dive in the kanji’s meaning and how they form concepts on their own and when put together. It will also give you nouns, verbs, and adjectives that use the same kanji that also help you connect meaning and concept. Again not good for school study, as the lessons are based on giving you the most basic kanji (in form) to the most complicated. It’s repetitive and keeps track of your comprehension of each kanji giving you the kuyomi and onyomi. Which if you didn’t know already, are important to know to build your kanji garden (knowledge). Definitely recommend this app for your Japanese Kanji journey!

It seems to fail more now that I’ve subscribed
1) Yes, it’s dodgy that they switch out to a third party merchant for subscription services, but you can still use Apple Pay with that merchant.
2) I feel confident this app will train me towards competency in record time. It would be perfect if writing practice was included. I move to StickyNotes for that.
3) I greatly appreciate the authentic Japanese voice talents instead of those horrific synthesized ones other apps use (like StickyNotes).
4) If you’re going to charge me, the app shouldn’t creep slowly up and off the screen, requiring a force quit and relaunch. It performs fine for a while, then suddenly the page is offset halfway up the page with the top part missing. At first you can pull the page down and recenter it, but eventually, it is stuck up there. Brilliant. 🙄 This app hasn’t been updated in a year, so it doesn’t play well with iOS 15. I will cancel my sub if an update doesn’t come by the time iOS 16 arrives.

Great Kanji Resource
I appreciate the level of customization and the nice layout. It takes just a bit of creativity to drill the readings into your memory since mnemonics aren’t given. I had an annoying issue with the keyboard not going away after typing, and the app will sometimes crash when learning a new kanji, but I’m super relieved to see that even now the developer is still responsive to error reports and was able to fix the bug for me in a short time. Overall the app is a great resource with a pleasant UI, and the cost is pretty well justified if you want to learn kanji effectively.

Good, but not safe.
The app was wonderful until the free trial ran out. I understand that there’s a cost of maintenance, and was willing to support the developers, but it’s absolutely ridiculous that their billing system is not through the App Store. It’s monumentally dangerous to have third parties have your credit card information, which is why you’re billed through the App Store in the first place... so it’s really disappointing that I’m locked into this diminutive app now because the app won’t let me pay for it in a SAFE manner. I want to be able to review more than just 10 kanji per day, and I want to pay for that ability— but it’s a simple fact that giving out credit card information like they’re asking for is extremely dangerous as it can get hacked and leaked out to nef

One of the best with major gripes
Seriously one of the best kanji learning apps I’ve ever used, however, it teaches you in order of most common and doesn’t have the option do so JLPT at all. Why? Also some of the words have no recordings and doesn’t let you look at radicals, search via radicals, etc. I’ve emailed the developer about suggestions and such but no answer at all. Not to mention that it’s been over 2 years since the app has last been updated. Why? It’s not like he disappeared, as I’m writing this, he updated a different app he developed 9 months ago and published a new app in 2022. So I’m giving this a 1 star rating because the developer needs to seriously step up considering how you have to pay to use this app and the lifetime payment option is over $100USD…

Best Kanji learning app
This app is incredible. I love the way it starts with basic kanji that act as components of more complex kanji and builds on your knowledge. Both on’yomi and kun’yomi readings are taught and tested, which I think is awesome. This app has been making it fun to learn kanji. I think one thing I might improve is with each kanji, including a small diagram of how it’s drawn (brushstrokes). Even though it’s not meant to teach drawing, I would love to have it included as reference. But overall, I highly recommend this app for anyone trying to learn kanji

Great App - No updates
I love this app, and starting off it was so good I got the lifetime. Learning Japanese is something that I want to do so it seemed obvious. I waited as long as I could before jumping. First, they don’t use iTunes money so you have to go through a third party, which is definitely sketchy.
Now to the real problem and the reason I give a whopping 1 star. The app used to offer audio reading of the words, which is one of the main reasons I got this app. A few weeks after acquiring lifetime, the audio just stopped. Now, I don’t have a way of hearing as I learn, and I’ve reached out via email, phone call, and everything in between with no reply. There’s no app support so I don’t know when or if there will ever be a solution.
Now to the real problem and the reason I give a whopping 1 star.
