Description

Ready to take your Japanese reading and listening comprehension to the next level? Welcome to Satori Reader.

COMPELLING CONTENT
Read from a growing library of engrossing stories written by native speakers for intermediate students, across genres such as fantasy, slice-of-life, thrillers, documentaries, news, and more.

AUDIO
Tap any sentence to hear it read aloud by native voice actors (no robots!).

ADAPTIVE KANJI USAGE
Crack the chicken-and-egg problem of reading kanji with our unique presentation engine, which adjusts the Japanese text to accommodate your actual knowledge. This allows you to challenge yourself for the kanji you should know without being overwhelmed by what you don't.

SMART DEFINITIONS
Tap any word for a definition. This is more than just an automated lookup. Satori Reader shows the actual sense of each word as it's being used in the sentence. For example, the particle の has many uses: it can indicate possession; it can turn the preceding verb or phrase into a noun; it can stand in for another word; and more. We show you exactly what is happening in every instance of every word.

FRIENDLY ANNOTATIONS
Gray underlines indicate longer annotations that break down tricky expressions, provide cultural background, or help you to read between the lines. Our editors work hard to anticipate what might be confusing and proactively help you to make sense of things. Good-bye, confusion. Hello, clarity!

SPACED REPETITION SYSTEM (SRS)
The built-in spaced repetition review system helps you to build your vocabulary. Create review cards instantly as you read. Each card you create takes along a snapshot of the sentence in which you encountered the word, further helping to cement it in your memory. You can even play back the audio of that sentence while reviewing the word!

HUMAN FEEDBACK
Still confused about something? Just ask in the comment section below each article. Knowledgeable staff are ready to help.

Satori Reader is built by a team that cares. Our goal is to bring satori (enlightenment) into your Japanese reading life. Set up a free account today, and let's get started.

mrmackerel,
I love this app
I’m N2 level, and have returned to live in the US. I love this app because there are interesting stories at native level, spoken at a normal rate of speed, and you can choose to have kana, furigana, or just written as normal. Not only can you look up every word in the stories, but some of the word definitions and grammar points go rather in-depth. And then on top of all this you can generate a vocabulary study list that uses a type of space repetition (that doesn’t overdo it if you miss a few days, swamping you with reviews). Furthermore, I don’t always have a lot of time, but the story chapters are short and so you can really just sit back and spend about 10 minutes or so for a quick lesson if that’s all the time you have. If you want more, you can plow ahead, no problem. Very versatile. And given all of the beginner to intermediate level grammar lessons that they also include for those who wish, I can imagine this versatile app being very useful for a very wide range of learners, from beginners all the way to certain somewhat advanced levels. As long as they keep expanding their content to include a greater variety of subjects including higher levels, I don’t quite see why I would ever stop using this app.
nwninja1,
Indispensable
TL:DR; The most important tool in my Japanese learning arsenal.

When I say I’ve tried the majority of the existing apps to assist in learning Japanese, I’m probably *understating* how far I’ve gone to find the best tools available. That being said, I regard Satori Reader as the most important part of that tool belt, second only to native speakers. It is the tool I do not go a day without using. Trying to learn vocabulary? You have hundreds of stories to mine words from. Need to remember the vocabulary? Use the app’s built-in SRS flash cards, or easily export to your alternate favorite. Need to work on listening comprehension? There is accompanying audio for each of the episodes in a series, complete with ambient sound effects. “But grammar is my stumbling block, not vocabulary or listening,” you say? Well then dive into the grammar lessons included with the app, provided by the maker of Human Japanese, that concisely explain essential grammar points with accompanying example sentences.

I have seen my confidence in Japanese skyrocket as I have made the usage of this app. The best use of money I have spent in language learning. Period.
SimplyReading,
Just started, and I love it!
I was wondering if there was a graded reader app for Japanese, and I was so surprised to find out they’re only two. But having just started this one, I’m pretty sure that it’s everything I’m looking for.

It has voice recordings, literal translation, translation notes, optional furigana, kana, or kanji—all of which are adjustable according to reading level. There’s also a feature that shows which articles you’ve started, and in-app spaced repetition flashcards that you can create as you’re reading so that it doesn’t detract from the reading experience. I don’t often R&R apps, but I was so surprised that an app this comprehensive has so few subscribers, and I wanted to do my part to get its name out. I’ll edit if any glaring problem pop up, but overall, I’m really looking forward to using this.
delesley.h,
Best Japanese language app ever.
This app has it all. The content consists of fun and interesting stories, with dictionary lookups for all words, and explanations of any tricky grammar or phrases. The stories have sentence by sentence narration by a native speaker. They can be shown with or without furigana.

That alone would be great enough, but you can tap on any words you don’t know, and create flashcards, to review with a spaced repetition system. The flashcards can be reviewed in the app, or exported to anki, and show every sentence you’ve seen the word in.

Really, this is language learning done as well as it can possibly be done, especially for Japanese. The only possible improvement they could make would be to add some manga to the mix, but that’s probably too much to ask…
Wildcaver,
There Is No Better App for Intermediate/Advanced Japanese
Satori Reader Is the best Japanese language app I have ever used. I was stuck for a long time trying to find suitable material to study. Everything I found was either too easy or too hard. This app is perfect. The material is challenging, yet fun and engaging. And the grammar notes are as fun to read as the stories.

This app has inspired me to re-engage in learning Japanese again. I use Satori Reader for entertainment and Sticky Study for the kanji memorization. I just completed the N3 kanji and vocabulary lists. My plan is to finish N2 and N1 next year and then sit for the JLPT N1 exam. At 55, that would mark a great personal achievement.

Thank you Satori Reader team for helping me rekindle my love for learning Japanese!
Mynameisannai,
I like what I am seeing!
I began using this app, but I am immediately interested in what it has to offer! They have a quite a few interesting interesting stories that I can’t wait to read! I like murder mysteries/events/stories so I am reading the Zama 9 murders one first. I like how you are able to see the meaning of each word then at the end you can find out what the whole sentence means which is really helpful. I can try to figure out for myself what it says then I can see if what I was thinking was right! I can’t wait to continue using this app and perhaps I will write another review once I have used this for a while! Keep up the good work!
Nayelianne,
Lots of value
Some things that set this app apart from some others:
1. Interesting stories with actual human voice acting and sound effects to really immerse you.
2. Clicking on an unknown word shows CONTEXT RELEVANT definitions and explanations on how certain terms are used, not just the usual dictionary form.
3. When you save words to study later, and you’re browsing your flash card list, you can see the sentence from which they were added from.
4. A team that very thoughtfully answers questions and patiently further explains grammar and other things on comments under the episode when asked.

I just wish we had an option to highlight/save certain words with custom colors like some other readers allow. And the option to underline certain words according to their JLPT level would come in very handy since we can’t really tell even if we click a word to see its definition.
shimewaza,
Another request for more advanced content
I recently signed up and have been sampling some of the content. The concept is brilliant and the app design is very well thought out. So far it’s an amazing resource for those at the advanced-beginner to intermediate level. However, like a previous reviewer wrote, I too wish for more advanced content. More challenging vocab, audio read at the speed and tone that Japanese really use when speaking with each other, and maybe some dialects like natural Kansai-ben with no punches pulled. I get that the customer sweet spot isn’t the advanced learner, but if your app does it’s job, more and more of your customers will eventually reach that level.
Hoai My Nguyen,
Wonderful stories but the app takes forever to load on my laptop :(
I download this app a few days ago on my phone to practice my Japanese. This app has amazing stories, beautiful narrator voices, and detailed grammar notes. It also has other amazing features to help you study Japanese! I love it so much that I also wanted to download it on my laptop. However, I was disappointed a bit because the app takes forever to load on my laptop. I waited for hours and it never finishes loading. It freezes on Retrieving Content Manifest. I hope the app gets fix soon, so I can study Japanese on my laptop!
Frezioh,
Makes me happy
This app is indispensable. They really put a lot of care and effort into making what is essentially the optimal learning experience, especially when it comes to the detailed explanations for grammar points. It’s so refreshing to have a human-written explanation that really walks you through understanding a new sentence structure.

When I learned that I could link this app to my WaniKani using its API token (which makes Satori Reader omit the furigana for kanji I’ve already learned) it literally made my day.

Sincerest thanks to those who contributed to this app
