Description
Health Management Resources (HMR) is a provider of weight management programs, products and services to the medical community in the United States. HMR helps to establish medical and behavioral intervention programs in hospitals, medical schools, and medical practices across the U.S. In addition to these clinic-based programs, HMR also offers programs that dieters can do on their own, with or without additional support. The basis of the treatment program is learning how to make lifestyle changes to lose weight and maintain the weight loss. HMR has published a number of research studies on the program results, including several on participants who have lost 100 pounds or more over a number of years
The HMR Diet was developed more than 30 years ago by Lawrence Stifler, a behavioral psychologist and president of HMR. It combines partial liquid fasting with low calorie meals and snacks for a complete diet plan, which they recommend for patients who need to lose over 40 lbs. The most intense portion of the HMR diet is within the first six-week period, where patients often lose the most weight.
The HMR diet consists of several phases to help patients adapt to healthier eating habits. During phase 1, the goal is for patients to lose weight quickly with home delivery of prepackaged meals and healthy lifestyle strategies to promote exercise and activity. Patients transition into phase 2 once the desired weight loss is achieved; the diet takes on less structure but still focuses on healthy eating habits learned during phase 1. An average weight loss of 23 pounds during the first 12 weeks is expected when patients follow the plan accordingly and do not enter phase 2 until a goal weight is reached.
