The Best!
I've studied Japanese through many apps, but this one has to be the most useful one I've found yet. In less than a day you can begin forming simple Japanese sentences! They slowly build upon the previous lessons until you can form larger sentences and understand how the grammar works. Best of all, there are NO ADS! *big sigh of relief*
However if you want to fluently know the kana as well as speech, I would recommend a different app. This one is best for learning speech alone, as they only briefly cover kana in each lesson.
The only problem I have is the prices for subscribing. $10 every month is well beyond my non-existent budget. I would pay $1 every month, or $1 for a chapter unlock... Maybe I'm just a cheapskate hehe.

Great app, but
I really like the layout and other people’s reviews but however, the downside is, the person who had made this app Is not making new lessons since I think the other guy had said 2014? And the app owner replied more lessons are production and will be coming out soon. This is 2019! How much longer they will keep us waiting? What’s keeping Tom? If Tom the one who made this app? I had emailed and sent the email to them but no reply, I had saw they’ve read it but no reply. Weird. Also their dictionary app had been gone from the App Store. Where are you why you did not finish making lessons for us? How much longer I have to wait for. The Olympic Games will be next year in Japan, that’s what you told us and your goal is to have us be fluent. Please tell me exact date when you put more lessons and read my email. Thank you. I. Do like this app though PS. now it has been how meany years now and they said they are going to make new lessons and they are going to make you fluent. Scam. Scam because they didn’t kept there word. Hello Tom or who ever is the developers you had said that I will get fluent in Japanese but no new content. How long you will keep us waiting for? The Olympic Games are in few days. Brilliant app BUT ...
The way this app is structured is very smart. Only two suggestions:
1) The PAUSE button on the top right corner is not the best thing ever. I would suggest to add a pause option on double-tap or something similar. Many times I found myself trying to formulate the correct translation of an English sentence, before the two Japanese guys did. Being able to stop the playback right away from the main window would be a great add.
2) The subscription is too freaking expensive! And I've even read somewhere that the lessons are not frequently updated as promised. I would pay something per chapter, but $10 a month is just too much, no matter how good the app is.
Please reduce the price (or better, make it a one-time payment!) and I'll subscribe/buy it immediately.

Great for Complete Begginers
This is the best "first step" into Japanese app of all that I've used (ranging from HJ to Rosetta Stone). This is best for those who don't want to jump straight into immersive learning, but still want context for everything they learn.
So while the tutoring and quizzes are smartly done to help learn, they also help vocabulary stick. However, I'd recommend a supplemental app like Kana Quiz or Japanese! for learning Hiragana/Katakana/Kanji letters themselves, as there is much less of a focus on that in this app.
For what it is though I think it accomplishes everything it sets out to and it amounts to a rewarding experience. After completing you will be ready to take on full immersion style programs and lesson apps (etc.).

I'm learning
I'm writing a brief review because I'm only in the early stages of the program. I'm learning very quickly, and I have the sense that it's something I CAN do. It's a good feeling. I did see the subscription price, and it seems like it's a little high, to be honest. I haven't had the need yet, though. Because it's so efficient, I might though. They break things down and explain everything with context, and the thoroughness of it works for my style of learning. I'd give this app a shot. The first 20 lessons are free, so there's nothing to lose.

This was my review on the last app iStart French ,I purchased from the same app developer, Mirai languages
It's s an app that is well organized and it makes you want to learn, plus the play and pause help so much. Get it you won't regret!, But.... what happens a lot is that the developer makes an app, then once is done with it they and don’t get more people to buy it, they Stop doing updates .. so you end up wasting your money 💰 on an app that was great at one time and could’ve continued to be even better.. but 👎🏼 no .. Mirai Languages fails you update their ups for news iOS firmware.. I want Mirai Languages to something to reimburse me for the iStart French app that I purchased from them .. and this why I give one star ⭐️ to this app.. because I know they will not update the app for the next new iOS version.. I expect a reply from the developer!

Great app for beginner just too expensive
It's a great app with interactive interface to learn Japanese and good detailed explanation on grammar. I took 1 star off for the subscription model:
1. It is too expensive even with education discount.
2. Each chapter has only 5 lessons and each lessons only cover a few content. It's easy to finish 2 chapters in just 5 days. The subscription restricting 2 new chapters download is too strict, have to wait till next month to start learning again
I will go for Minna no nihongo instead(I don't know about the English version but the Chinese version is quite good and it's based on a commonly used well-trusted"textbook" for Chinese community to learn Japanese)

Stops at lesson 160
It stops updating at lesson 160. It's been stuck since September 2014.
The subscription says that you can expect a new chapter every month but mirai hasn't be able to commit. They should at least tell us why there is a delay.
What that said. It costs 2.99 a month for subscription and with that much you have access to all 160 lessons. The app requires you to pass all the quizzes before it lets you progess.
But other than that, below are my thoughts on the app
I've never had the "language gene" so for all of my life I only spoke English. I tried to learn Chinese and Spanish from school, but languages just kept disappearing from my memory.
I was sure that I'd never learn a second language until on a whim I tried Mirai Japanese. Wow. Within minutes I had learned a handful if words. Mind you, I am the type of person that can hear a word and repeat it 100 times and still forget it.
I applaud the Mirai Japanese method for being able to actually teach me something and remember it... I just wish they would continue....

Would you consider
1. Add option to show mixed kana and English(eg kana followed by English or vice versa). Now it defaults to kana only or English only. The benefit is obvious I can see both at the same time and don’t have to tap to switch.
2. It’s ok to highlight what is playing but can you not blur the rest content so much so that they are not visible at all?
3. Add a button somewhere to pull up kana chart quickly(maybe next to “pause” you decide where it is best).
(Im happy with the app and paid for it before it switched to sub model.)

Great, but...
This app is amazing! Best out all I have tried out. I am a beginner to Japanese, and so far it has been helping me alot.
It has no ads, which is a great thing, but one problem. The subscription. It is WAY to expensive. It would have been nice to make it free so everyone can enjoy it. Some people can't even buy the subscription. It is really a pain... Maybe reduce the price? And where are the updates? It has been quite awhile since the last one. I really love this app so I hope you will keep developing this. I highly recommend this app to beginners.
