Learn Japanese: Sensei Hack 1.7 + Redeem Codes

I’ve been looking around, trying to find a good way to properly learn Japanese grammar and get explanations on it, but it wasn’t a very successful endeavor. I decided to just search up something on the App Store for kicks and found this. I’ve already gone through the first two lessons, and if the rest of the app is like this, then I think it’ll be smooth sailing. Good examples, completed lessons (as in, even though they frequently offer that you download their other apps, they still have the information there in the lesson so you don’t have to download them if you feel confident enough with what’s there), catching the little things that might let you slip through the cracks, and being short enough that you get what you need in a few minutes...what a wonderful run-on sentence.

But again, I’ve only been on here for maybe an hour. That’s not enough to see the whole grand scheme of things yet, even though they easily come across as professional and you can tell a lot of effort was put into the content and the appearance of the app, which I highly appreciate. I recommend downloading and checking it out yourself. Less reviews for an app doesn’t mean it’s not as good. Give it a shot.

I love this app. I always had a hard time learning on the website because I didn’t know how to proceed, but this app is so convenient. I use my phone was more than my computer, so I can use the app anytime and anywhere. Simply being able to rate my understanding makes it easy to know what I’ve read and what I might need to go back to later.
I think something that would make the app even better is if I could mark lessons in some other way, too, like with a star. I study with Bunpro, and when it comes to the Essential Grammar section, it’s quite patchy with what I already know and what I need to add to the SRS when I eventually read about it in Sensei. If I could star a lesson (maybe just a “Favorites” section that I could use to keep track of those lessons I’ll need to add for now), it would make it easier to remember what I’ll need to add to my Bunpro reviews later so I don’t forget to review what I learned.
Thanks for making this app! I was struggling with motivation for learning grammar, but this has solved my problem!

One of the things that kept me from really becoming fluent in Japanese is the lack of good affordable materials. I tried duolingo and it was just too tedious that I stopped. The only thing I’ve had ok success with is the dictionary Japanese which has flash cards, but not grammar. I did check out the original version of this app but it was so outdated in its graphic design that it made it really hard to use. Though they fixed that and I’m hoping I can try again at Japanese, I’m so glad I checked the App Store again for a Japanese learning app. I also love how there’s no ads. How are you able to make a app that’s completely free? Just, how?

This is the best digitalization of Tae Kim’s book I’ve seen. It includes not only the meaning of each vocab word but the reading and kanji writings as well. The interface is perfect, has a dark mode, offers self-rating and generates stats based off that. My only suggestions would be to 1. add a search bar so I can locate a specific chapter based on certain keywords (currently supported by at least one other Tae Kim book app) 2. a bookmark feature and 3. iCloud sync across devices. This app would be my go-to if it supports those! Thank you developer!!

I’ve only just started using this app. I’ve been using the kana-learning app by the same developer to gain a solid base understanding of those characters (I highly recommend it!), and it mentioned this one, so I figured I’d give it a try. I’m only about ten minutes in, so it’s pretty early for a review, but I’m going to leave my thoughts here and update later if I remember!

So far this app shows a lot of promise. The introduction is very intelligently written and I feel confident that these lessons will present the material in a logical way.

My only complaint so far is that there are a few instances of iOS taking text that happens to be the name of a movie or band and turning it into a link. I expect that should be pretty easy for the developer to fix though, so those probably won’t last for long :)

Anyway, I’m really looking forward to using this app! I’ll try to remember to update this review when I get a bit further.

The course is so well-organized and truly understands the mindset of a person learning Japanese for the first time. It's not condescending yet it's personable at the same time. It prioritizes the right components of learning Japanese and moves the learner along at a good pace.

The app itself is really well-designed and makes Tae Kim's course even better by structuring the information coherently. The buttons are very responsive, and there's a feature where you can evaluate yourself.

I love that there is a Mac version as well as an iPhone version and that there are two more accompanying apps for anki method of learning vocab and the characters.

The only suggestion for improvement I have is for the iPhone app and the Mac app to be able to pick up where I left off and track my progress, as I tend to alternate between the two devices.

The app is quite literally Tae Kim’s famous online guide to Japanese cleanly packaged into an iOS app. There are a few notable enhancements over Tae Kims actual webpage that are almost entirely cosmetic but quite worth mentioning:

1. Alternate color scheming if you like (doesn’t affect the text of the guide itself though)
2. Ability to change text size
3. Bookmarking chapters and self-evaluating yourself on a section out of 5

Overall I think just having ported to guide into an app with nice color scheming on the text deserves a 4/5, since it’s so convenient to read the guide on a mobile device in its own app as opposed to the webpage. The extra enhancements for me bring it to 5/5.

Overall the app is simple, but everything I think it needs to do is done right, and there’s a few additional features on top that have been nice to have.

I can’t get over how well put this app! It’s so good! And it’s based on Tae Kim’s guide for learning Japanese which I believe is the best approach to learn Japanese.
I love that this app comes with an other app dedicated for studying kana which is equally well put.
This app is seriously so good that I deleted most of my other apps for learning Japanese.
I can’t wait for the developer to come out with the dedicated kanji app because I want to get a grip on the writing before I can dive into this app more.

The app looks nice, and works well. However, it is difficult to figure out some of the features shown in the screenshot. For example, it showed being able to write a kanji using the Apple Pencil for evaluation but I have yet to figure out. It might not have that feature but it’s shown in the screenshot, making it look like it does.

That’s the one improvement I can think of is better support for Apple Pencil. Being able to annotate on self evaluations would be helpful if I don’t have paper with me.

It’s in article format, so it can explain much more than a quiz format can. There are also very good examples with nice translations that correspond to the Japanese version so it’s very easy to understand. However, if you get bored reading articles, then you’ll probably get bored of this real fast too because it has no interactive features and is more like a digital textbook than an app.
