Lenny Adelaide,
Just Wow!
While I love pixel games, it is hard to captivate me with the more simplistic styles of play. But I have always had a soft spot for text base games where your choices matter and this one is the best so far. The best part is: it is challenging and requires you to be very strategic. You can’t accept every single quest all the time. You can’t spend your whole game instigating all the fights possible until you are strong enough. Plus there is n incentive to retire your seasoned fighters and train up characters you meet along the way. I just found this game today and have probably played it for 7 hours. I can’t stop! The commercials pop up just infrequently enough that I don’t feel unvalued as a customer. It actually makes me want to pay to support the game without feeling like I got baited and switched (some free games are impossible to enjoy without paying). Really hope this game keeps expanding or that the dev makes another game that is similar. UPDATE: There does seem to be a glitch where I can no longer view the top bar when I go into town. Kind of hard to make informed purchases without access to that info.
Orph~,
Doesn’t scale properly to my phone screen anymore
I love this game, but if the dev was going to change the way the text was scaled before it’s no longer with a smaller phone screen in mind, then there should be an option to allow the original scaling. Now the whole game is weirdly zoomed in for my iPhone 6 screen, so some of the text in the opening screens runs off into the forward and back buttons, and the battle screen now is halfway cutting into the tiles on either side of the screen, which makes it a bit hard to tell what’s going on at the edge of the battlefield and also a little more difficult than is necessary to tell your units to go onto those tiles.
Also the text just generally feels really large on my screen and you have to scroll enough in this game even when most of the text is on screen at once, so that’s not ideal, even if not major.

All that being said, the game is overall fantastic and I used it to get through my onboarding process and first when I started my current job and I was left to sit around a computer for hours haha. Occasionally you get moments where you’re asked to escort someone across the map for 20 coins and it’s just not worth it because you have to move them in battle due to them not have the discipline necessary to stay still on their turn and that alone makes escorts so much worse but otherwise it’s got a fun gameplay loop that I really enjoy and would recommend.
3DKQM,
Masterpiece in developing
The game is fenomenal, the art atyle, the stories, the choices, the map, everything hit the the right spot for me. The mechanic is extremely easy to understand and get into, your choices does have weight to it which directly affect the outcomes, which in turn help each run unique from another. Though as it is still in developement (I hope) the game is quite "short" as once your team pick up the xps and upgrades, they kind of snow ball almost everyfight as the AI leave much to be desires. I only found this gem ~2 days ago and I already racked quite an embarassing amount of playtime already. One last grief I have with the game though is that once your party all finished their goals, you have to depart with them to recruit new ones to do their quest line which in turn drop the fire power of the team tremendously as the new guy not only is underlevel and geared, but the enemies are stronger as well.
Jacegogo,
Great game, but too punishing
This game has great gameplay, good story arks and brilliant dialogue. It is a jewel of a game. BUT…it has one massive flaw. Occidental Hero’s is way to punishing. If a character drops to zero they are permanently gone. While this may not sound like a massive problem, as this is realistic, it is crushing to constantly have to replace your party members makes advancing impossible. And yes, I know that there is a chance to revive a fallen member if you have a fencer with the army surgeon background, but fencers are almost always the first ones to die in a fight, so the surgeon can’t revive themselves because they are dead.

I think the best way to fix this would be giving the character a major penalty due to injury when they drop to zero HP, but not killing them unless the whole party falls to zero. The surgeon would now have a fifty-fifty chance to now have an injury. Maybe an injury would give a character a 50% penalty to all stats, for 20 moves, or something like that.

Thanks for reading my comment. I hope it proved useful to both devs and potential buyers.
EmceeComplexity,
Blown away
This game is absolutely fantastic. I’m usually skeptical about games like this. With a bit of imagination and understanding of the structure, this can turn into one of the best games you’ve touched. It’s an open world that really pays attention to details. You start off with a small party in a city. Slowly take on small quests until the cities start to trust the reputation of your team. Teams are customizable by firing a team member or asking someone to join your crew at the local tavern in any of the towns. Keeping in mind you have to constantly buy supply for your team, every movement has to be calculated because you burn through your supplies with every step. The world is vast and limitless. I’m an extremely impressed with this wonderful game. I’m buying just to support. I highly recommend to anyone looking for something to get sucked into. ITS WORTH IT.
The TCG Guy,
The best mobile RPG I’ve ever played
Occidental Heroes is deceptively simple to learn, inheriting combat elements from hex-based roguelike Hoplite while innovating on that formula for a party-based tactical experience. Beyond that, the game is full of well-written, narrative rich quests that draw you into this alternate-history colonial setting. Characters develop meaningful stories as you play, leaving you heartbroken when the ally who has been with you through thick and thin finally falls in battle. As if that wasn’t enough, the overworked map is charming and the various cities and settlements feature gorgeous little pixel-art tableaux. If you’re itching for a game with tactical combat, rich narrative, historical themes, and high replayability, Occidental Heroes is definitely worth your time (and the $2.99 that it costs to remove ads).
TheProphet892,
Wow! Occidentally Perfect!
I am thoroughly impressed with Occidental Heroes. Everything is way better than you would expect from a free mobile game. The minimalist pixelated art style is uniquely charming. The gameplay concept is simple and a awesome throwback to classic role playing games. While the combat can be unforgiving, it is really quite fun once you get the hang of it. Some words of advice: don’t get attached to your characters, they will die or retire fairly quickly, be smart and extremely careful in combat, always stock up on supplies and buy pack animals, and make sure to not run out of money by always having 2 or 3 active quests. Finally, please download this game, it’s so fun and you will have a blast!
Swiftnynja,
Great potential, just one problem
This game has amazing potential. It’s a shame that it has such an issue though. This issue is that you can’t tell how hard a fight is going to be until you start dealing and receiving damage. You would think that it wouldn’t be wise to engage in a fight when you’re outnumbered, however, there is no way to tell how many enemies will be in a fight beforehand, and it is possible to win some fights even though you’re outnumbered. Also, even if you end up retreating, if you have animals to carry supplies, you will lose them (I have never retreated with pack animals before so I’m going off what the game says). As I said, I believe this game has a lot of potential, but until they fix these issues, I don’t think that potential will be exposed.
KittenMoney,
Occidentally in love...
Maybe it’s the hexagons, pieced-together as if someone has painstakingly spent years going over every little detail of the story that unfolds as you move along them; maybe it’s the way nothing is handed to you, and it’ll take several play throughs to understand the real potential of your party members, and the game itself; maybe it’s the fact that I can start off as a woman (spoiler alert: am woman); maybe it’s the dev’s obvious love for the genre, which shines brightly in a world of gacha garbage.

Either way, I love this game and it’s exactly the challenge I was looking for. And it’s probably what you’re looking for, too.
CygnusX06,
Lovely game, but it needs a fair bit more.
This game is the best pixel rpg that I’ve played on mobile, and it definitely lives up to its goal. Although, we could do with say, a ferry at Grionti that you could take to one of three separate small islands and back to grionti. Also, could do with more places to go in the North and West. Maybe South West area past St. Cithia’s could be of use? Also, maybe add more options and opportunities for the player to choose how they do encounters, like more options for the player to be the bad guy. For example, your party eventually becomes famous, but why not have options to have you known more infamously? Just wondering. Also, my main gripe is that there isn’t enough weapon variety!
