User Reviews

I'm a piano teacher of 15 years and have more and more students who want to play chords and improvise. This app is a perfect resource for them. I like it because it's thorough but, at the same time, straightforward.

I am new to piano and familiar with some scales and chord progressions, but this app will help me to understand and explore various combinations. I pair this app with additional learning material online to help me fully understand the math/science behind music.

This app is excellent for understanding scales, chords, chord progressions, and the circle of fifths. I like the easy-to-use interface. It only includes standard scales and chords. I have another app with many complicated and confusing scales that I've never heard of, much less can pronounce. I just wanted something to show me the standard scales and chords, which this app does. It also sounds like a chord or scale.

It gives you so much when you’re stuck composing. I’m relatively new to music theory, and this makes everything I’ve been learning about chords super clear.

I have taught piano for 33 years. This is the best app for any level of the student. It is so easy to use; kids love it when I use the iPad in their lessons.

boomchikadigitybop,
Fantastic addition to any DAW
There are a number of apps that allow you to create chord progressions, but not as efficiently and quickly as this app. The interface is slick and wastes no space with extra unnecessary features. Adding a colorful chord within a specified key is one to two taps away.

The ability to create chord progressions, set the length of each chord, and export to midi, straight into a folder that can opened in either a mobile or desktop DAW makes this an invaluable addition to any producer’s toolkit.

As someone who works primarily on pop music that uses a lot of synthesized sounds, I would much prefer creating chord progressions and patterns on an easy to look at app like this rather than pulling out my computer or manually trying to draw notes into the screen of a mobile daw.

I can’t recommend this app enough as it’s inspired me to go more mobile with my production process. The full version is worth the purchase!

Coming from a more rhythmic-centric dance-music perspective, there is one feature that would drastically improve my personal workflow: the ability to repeat a chord of a specified length. Currently, when I add a new chord it automatically is set to be 4 beats. It would be helpful for rhythmic chord creation to be able to, for instance, repeat a 16th note length chord multiple times.

In the meantime, I will be using this app to build chord progressions that I can further break up in a daw.
nowaysteveistaken,
Amazing tool!
This app is phenomenal. I have played piano for nearly 15 years and the large library of scales helped me to be able to improvise melodies and to pick out accurate melody from existing songs within minutes. I can now play many intermediate level songs by ear with only a chord structure after only a few minutes of tinkering on the piano. I could tell within 5 minutes of downloading the app that it was very high quality so I quickly upgraded to the full version, and $7 is nothing for the huge library this offers. If you are just learning the keyboard, practicing theory, ear training, or and advanced musician, this is a great app. I was amazed over and over at how this app took me to the next level of playing within minutes. I do not work for the company, this is a legitimate review. I am a huge skeptic and rarely write reviews. I am truly impressed with this app and will recommend it to my friends and any beginning musician. Well worth the up graded price.
Hipstard,
Excellent learning tool!
I almost never write reviews, but I am learning piano and I could not imagine doing so without this app. I am not a complete beginner in music, been playing guitar for 20+ years, but keys were always appealing.

I have always been a “by ear” musician. With this app, I can mess around and find something that sounds good on my keyboard, and the interface allows me to find the scale or chord I am playing in seconds. I’m making more connections with actual music theory in a few months, than I have in my whole lifetime playing guitar. This app makes it easy.

You get a robust feature set in the free version, so much so, that as a beginner, I haven’t had much need for the rest, but I plan to purchase the full version anyway, because you just can’t help but support the developers of such a useful tool.
Songcreator777,
One of the best useful apps ever!
For learning piano this app is indispensable and well worth the $4.99 to have it all. As a visual learner you can quickly see the patterns and make sense of the use of fingering, especially with scales. I can even practice memorizing scales when away from an actual piano. Plus you have everything you need on the screen - if you want to know the musical notation but also want to see where it is on the piano keyboard its all there - plus you can play it back. When practicing scales you can choose whether it's the notes or the finger numbers that appear on keyboard. You would have to spend at least $35 to find a paperback chord book that still wouldn't contain all of this without it being too large of a book. Bravo to the team that took the time to develop this app - thanks for that!!!
Bransenj,
A MUST HAVE for musicians
This might be the single most important resource for musicians, especially self taught musicians who learn and play by ear. I don't know how I made it without the tools in this simple yet powerful app but now that I found it I'm opening up my skill set to new and ascended heights. The wealth of scales available is exhaustive and the song feature is an added bonus. I was looking for an option to play a set of notes and it would tell you what chord it is and which inversion. But I find the challenge of discovering the chord on my own to be a powerful learning experience so in a way I'm happy it's not there. Get the full version if you're serious about your musicianship.
Deco madness,
Needs copy/paste/insert composing options
This app does a great job with chords and scales. However, I find it annoying that when composing there is no way to insert a chord at a specific bar. All additions are inserted at the bottom of the score. So if you want to insert a chord in the middle of a piece, you have to add it to the end and drag it to the measure where you want to insert it. And if you want to insert 4 measures, you have to repeat this process four times. There is no way to copy a chord, multiple chords, or a section and paste into the score at a point you designate. You have to move just one chord at a time. You can duplicate multiple bars, but they’re always placed at the end of the score and that may not be where I want them to go. In my opinion, copy/paste/insert functions would elevate this app from being very good to excellent.
bold.dreamer,
Simply awesome!
The best piano Chords/Scales/Progressions app on AppStore I found so far (and I’ve been looking long and hard).

So what is so special about this app? -Well, imagine this: you take like best 10 similar apps; then you extract the best features they offer; filter out all fancy bells&whistles leaving just the most useful stuff; make sure everything works perfectly; add simple responsive GUI; then wrap it all up into single app with and call it Chords 🤗

Also... Big fat THANK YOU and KUDOS to developers for not making “yet another lousy pointless piano app” (like for real, I mean it, It’s dope - please keep it this way! 😉).
Sidfail,
Helpful
I use this app mainly for finding out what a specific chord that I see on a chord chart looks like on the piano, and although I know all the major and minor chords, I am still trying to figure out what the more complex chords like E/G# and F#m7 look like on the piano, and although I can’t get all the chords from this app because I don’t have the paid version, I still am able to use this app about half the time when I find an unfamiliar chord. This app also beats other apps because it does not have any adds (as far as I have seen anyway). The only reason I am not rating this as a 5 star review is that I don’t get all the chords in the free version, which of course I understand. The producers have to get money somehow, right?
Drummerkat,
Simple interface and full of information
This app is great for understanding scales, chords, chord progressions, and the circle of fifths. I like the easy to use interface. You select the key and it shows the chords or scales automatically. I just wanted something to show me the common scales and chords, and this app does it, but if you want very advanced scales and chords then you will find them here. It also plays the sounds of the chord or scale.
Julie Hop,
4.5 stars
I love the app, I personally think it’s one of the best apps for writing music— it’s the best app I have found yet for music writing. Although there are a lot of options!.. I just wish there were more options -like more possible rhythms, multiple instruments at once, and most importantly there could be more options for ‘recommended chords’ because sometimes 0 chords show up and it’s like 🤷🏽‍♀️. On the bright side, there’s the AWESOME FEATURE where you can select ANY chord— where there’s a huge variety of possible simple and complex chords. 4.5 ☀️☀️☀️☀️💫
