Why Shapa? We all know that weight gain is linked to serious health risks, from heart disease to diabetes. But for most of us, losing weight is an uphill battle. Shapa takes a behavioral science approach that understands the psychology behind why it’s difficult to lose weight.

Developed by leading social scientist Dan Ariely, Shapa guides you to long-term weight management success through achieving healthy milestones in a personalized program. Shapa pairs an innovative device with a user-friendly app to analyze, track, and motivate you. Shapa is not a diet and exercise program - it is a long term health solution.

Akexia2,
Helping me to make much needed changes!
I love the idea behind this app/program. As someone who has for years looked to dieting as the way to lose weight I now see the key role that making behavioral changes plays in achieving overall health - which is in actuality my overall goal.

One main issue (and reason for the missing star): One part of the program consists of missions of which the user has the option of accepting or declining one or both. If declined another is offered. There are times I’ve declined a mission that I’m certain I would benefit from simply because I may be unable to complete it within a specified time period because of circumstances outside of my control. MY ISSUE? I get the response that the mission may not be right for me so I won’t be offered that mission again - no questions asked. For me personally that’s very disappointing because as I indicated above, the mission (s) declined may be some that I desperately need to complete in order to make the behavioral changes necessary to help me achieve optimum health.

Like This system!
I like the non-intrusive way this scale and weight control system works. If you prefer to not have someone constantly looking over your shoulder this scale let’s you see progress or backsliding and let’s you take control of it yourself. The missions help you accomplish your goals by giving you set concrete tasks related to several aspects of healthy weight loss; they help you alter your self awareness and mindfulness, food habits, activity, and other relevant aspects of healthy living. And it’s fun to get the virtual reward badges too! I love seeing my Shapa Age change as I accomplish more mission goals and lose weight! Shapa Age is what they calculate based on the goals you accomplish and your weight & BMI. Really fun!

Not helpful for non traditional dieters
I started using Shapa for motivation but I haven’t found what was expected. The daily missions are often not in line with my IF or OMAD lifestyle and the fact that they only offer two per day is demotivating. If I reject a mission because it does not fit with my lifestyle and I have to wait for the next day for a new suggestion which also often doesn’t fit. The result….I spend days waiting for a mission that actually will help provide a small change and all the while the mission completion rate remains low. Potentially would help if they targeted specific lifestyles rather than assume everyone eats three meals per day and loves leftovers or have a large network of like minded people who want to work out with me. I requested to see more water consumption challenges and have only seen a couple in the past 5 months. While it is not helpful for me, I can see how it may he useful for someone following a standard calorie in calorie out diet approach.

Concept good/app poor
After using Shapa now 6 mos I have mixed feelings. I still love the concept and keeps me focused on the big picture/overall trends and not obsessed with day- to-day changes. However the app really needs to up its game. My biggest gripes are around it’s interoperability. Since Shapa doesn’t give you much trending data except your current color, current months average weight and starting month average I find the trend lines in the Apple Health app to be much more insightful...when Shapa actually sends this data over. I notice that it will have weeks of unreported data when I’ve been using Shapa daily. Also within app it has never accurately been able to upload my workout data, and I’m not going to take the time to enter this when all my other fitness apps synch seamlessly. So essentially the app is worthless to me except for the daily weigh-in, which I would be ok with if Shapa reliably synched my data to Apple Health. Until these interop/synch issues are resolved the reoccurring subscription is not worth it IMO.

Total Disappointment
While the previous version of the app stayed true to the company commitment to stay away from actual weight in terms of lbs as a metric, this version includes weight as a number. This is ridiculous and disappointing, especially since there are so many other ways to display progress without using literal weight in pounds. The company will say that there is an option to turn this new feature off but its existence, and how the app writes daily weight to Apple Health, completely defeats the purpose of selling a “weight free” scale. It literally is no longer truly numbers free. Even worse, the “missions” you are given include typos that should be caught by simple proofreading and are generally of little benefit given the cost paid for the associated AI capability. “Missions” to do things like avoid fried food for a week or send a silly selfie to a friend certainly aren’t remotely innovative. This app and associated scale provide no benefit that a regular $10 scale combined with a google sheet, a few formulas, and some math couldn’t for significantly less money. This has become a colossal waste of money.

Disappointing
I love the concept and was super excited to use this. After 20 days of weighing in to “calibrate” the scale works sporadically. I’ve twice had to contact tech support for simple things like the days not updating. And then, most recently, it is not registering my weigh-ins at all. I keep getting the same, repeated error. The app itself is really only good for the colors. The rest of it is distracting and seems to be targeted at people who are just starting to take care of themselves - like at all. I wanted this to be my solve for maintenance to get away from numbers and focus instead on the results I am going for, but in the end it’s so unreliable I just hop on my regular scale. Which, BTW doesn’t require my phone at the ready, endless syncing and resyncing, and gives me an immediate result. For something as simple as standing on a scale, this product makes what was a sleepy, brainless activity something that requires work and tech support. No thank you, I have enough of that in my life.
Kappfun,
Idea great, development limping
So far, the idea and the promise are great, but the delivery is erratic. Sometimes I have to step on the scale more than once to wake it up (no, its not the battery). The idea of having to commit to a specific daily AM an PM hour for stepping on the scale is totally unrealistic. The daily tasks are mostly annoying and sometimes totally outdated (drink 8 glasses of water, hug your friend, write your feelings in a journal, use interesting spices in your cooking, etc.). The praise and the award badges for being “good” are inane. But what’s most irritating is that the app does not refresh itself daily and I have to turn off the phone (recycle it) every day for the app to show a new day (no, it’s not my iPhone, and even if it is the iPhone’s latest software upgrade, Shapa’s job is to be always caught up). I committed to 2 years and that was likely a very stupid thing to do.
Cicy23,
Waste of time
I'm one of those that has spent so much money on weight loss fads. Fair warning, don't waste your money on this one like I did.
You have to step on the scale twice a day for 10 days to even be assigned a color, BUT if you forget the evening weigh-in like I did, then you have to keep weighing until you do remember, so I didnt get a color assigned for 15 days.
When I did finally get a color, I was assigned green -- which is supposed to be good -- but I had actually gained 6lbs.
Also, thats it. The big huge tedium of daily weigh ins, waiting & waiting for this color assignment & you get a color & thats it. Thats the program. No details on what the color means or details of your progress. Just step on & green again. If you gain or lose weight over 3 weeks then the color will change.
If I have to wait 3 weeks to see a positive trend, well its just not worth it. I just dont see or get any point to this entire thing.
rvk43,
a waste much better scale/app options
I bought a shapa scale because to earn points at work I had to, but shortly after doing so I went out and bought a second scale that actually gave me the data I wanted to see on a daily basis.

The shapa app is terrible as basically they never give you the data they record they simply give you a color. Blue, teal, green, lite grey and dark grey. The greys mean you are gaining weight and the blues mean you are losing weight. It also calculates a shapa age as it takes all the data points it collects, processes them and then returns your shapa age.

I want to understand my progress with finite data and there is no way to see it using this app. If I didn’t have to do this for work I would have tossed it out a week later. I sent them an email asking them to reconsider their dashboard perhaps allowing users to see their data if they wish, but they never responded. I get it that body weight varies from day to day and that won’t affect my psyche I just want to see the trend that you are collecting.

If you want to know your weight and other key metrics like body fat, BMI, water weight and body mass don’t get this scale as it is a waste. If you want a delicate feel good about yourself scale then get this piece of
hk94,
Save your money
I wish I read the app reviews before I purchased this. This app is so buggy and cannot do simple arithmetic. I’ve been weighing myself morning and night religiously for 1 month. In that time, I’ve lost 5lbs according to my traditional scale. But according to Shapa, I’m “green” every day, which means no change. However, the home screen reports that my average color is “teal”, meaning slight loss, even though the app has never once shown me a teal reading. The progress screen says I have lost 1 lb since joining. But when you change the settings to show your weight, the starting weight and current weight match my normal scale and show a 5 lbs loss. So let’s recap. Very expensive subscription system reports no weight loss when there has been, seems to feel that 5lbs equals 1lb, and that NOT telling me that I have had a weight loss is psychologically motivating.
