• New Technologies to Research
This patch introduces the S.C.I.F. and the Interspecies Medical Network, two new technologies of particular interest to spying or research focused races.
• Upcoming Tech displayed in the Research Section
Find yourself unsure as to what technologies are coming next when you finish researching that Gauss Turret? Now all you need to do is tap a toggle button and all future technologies will be displayed.
• New Racial: Robust Techies
Robust Techies can be thought of as the "Natrual Tinkers" trait for research builds; races with this attribute will convert 20% of their planetary research into production.
• Racial Balance Changes
In v1.2.1 we transitioned over to a new server to provide a better multiplayer experience. One of the advantages to doing so is that I could run analytics against the winning games and see how each of the racial traits were performing. Using this knowledge has helped myself and the SO players to fine tune the current racial attributes to provide a richer strategic experience, opening up new paths to play and stay competitive. The changes are numerous and explained in detail in the Galactic News, but they include changes to Galactic Navigators, Repulsive, Shared Intelligence, Battle Hardened, Free Thinking, Quick Thinkers, Slow as Sloths, Tolerant, Sanctioned Piracy, and Highly Trained Smugglers.
• More Sorting Options
By popular demand, we have added several new sorting options to the Empire and Galaxy screens. You can now sort by Planet Size, Capacity, Buildings Built, Distance from your Empire, and by specials.
• Blockade and Combat Changes
Planets which are being blockaded by the enemy, on in systems which have active combat, may no longer purchase production, build ships or starbases. This change makes blockading a more effective tool and opens up new lines of strategic thought.
• New "Disengage" Combat Command
Joining the "Retreat" command is the newly minted "Disengage" command. Retreat has been here for a while, and its purpose is for a smaller force to escape quickly from combat and rendezvous at the nearest safe haven. Disengage is meant to be used by a larger force who chooses to tactically withdraw from a combat to be ordered elsewhere.
• Much, much more

• Fleet Routes
You can now specify routes for your fleets to automatically follow. A route is set to redirect all fleets from one system to exactly one other system. Fleet routes is a long requested feature I am happy to announce has made it into the game!
• Interstellar Distance Measurement
Sometimes it can be handy to know exactly how many parsecs are between two star systems, and exactly how long it might take one of your fleets to travel between them. Now you can press the "ruler" button to measure these values between two arbitrary stars.
• Improvements to Multiplayer Matchmaking
In the new "My Profile" section you can now specify whether you are a casual or active player and the general timezone during which you enjoy playing. The matchmaker will then match against players with similar timezone and amount of time to play against. You can also now turn off automatic invites.
• New Racial: Natural Tinkers
The past several patches have helped non-production racial builds become viable for winning strategies. As a result, research trait usage is on the rise. This new racial brings a production focused option for players to use. Every worker in your empire will generate a bonus +1 research toward your Empire's research production (this bonus is capped at +100 per turn).
• Balance: Leaders
First Cerebrum, Overlord Terminifera, Xin-krek, Tyrrhenius have all been tweaked. Please see the "Galactic News" section for complete details.
• Balance: Brilliant Researchers
Brilliant Researchers has returned to being a random chance to receive a new tech. However, this random chance is now displayed to the player on the research screen and it increases each time Brilliant Researchers fails to provide you with a new tech. This method retains the gambler's aspect of the original trait, but provides the player with enough information to make strategic choices around when the trait will succeed.
• Less Returns For Scrapping
Scrapping ships to production will now only produce 80% of their original production value (down from 100%). In addition, scrapping to credits will now only produce 30% of the original cost in credits (down from 50%). This is the first of several iterations around scrapping; stay tuned in future updates for further tweaks.

• Cloud AI
Long turn times and low memory crashes are a horrible drag for older devices playing on massive galaxies. We have introduced a fantastic new option which eliminates both of these issues in one swoop: Cloud AI! Turn on Cloud AI to have your single player turns processed on our dedicated server, resulting in turns that complete up to 5x faster than before, while crashing less. Cloud AI does use your network connection to communicate with the server, so it is off by default. Go to the game setting to turn it on!
• Upgraded Multiplayer Experience!
We have augmented our fantastic GameCenter asynchronous gaming with a brand new server! We have introduced a slew of new features to improve your play experience:
- Simultaneous Turns: all players in a game can take their turn at the same time, no more waiting
- Turn Timers: no more games stuck waiting for an abandoned player, there are now two new turn timer options to choose from
- Real-time Chat: all of your games now have a real-time chat room associated with them; scheme with your allies in between turns
- Post-game Review: Game over? Now you can review the game stats and galaxy after its done
- Custom Game Titles: Having trouble keeping your game straight? Now you can name that whatever you want
- Friend Profiles: view interesting game statistics of your friends
• Balance: Research
Research in Starbase Orion has traditionally been too easy; colonize a bunch of planets, build a bunch of research centers, and you have no need to devote any population on research. This abundance of research results in the tech tree feeling too small, and it makes it harder for research focused races to compete (production races can essentially build easy research!). To improve the longevity of the game, and balance out more racial builds, we have made the following changes
- Research centers have lost their per building bonus
- Orbital labs have lost their per building bonus, and instead provide a +% based bonus to colony research
- Brilliant researchers now has a 100% chance of providing a bonus random tech (but now costs 6 points)
• Balance: Racial traits
Small Homeworld, Sanctioned Piracy, Battle-hardened, Tolerant, Small-minded, Slow Thinkers, Quick Thinkers, and Borderline Genius have all had some tweaks and adjustments.
• New Leader Option: Tournament
This feature introduces some unique strategic decisions to leader auctions. In addition to each player being able to ban a specific leader, each leader is now "rented" for a specific number of turns (between 30 and 60). Should you pour all of your finances into acquiring a good leader when you won't have them forever? Perhaps, perhaps not!
• Stability and Performance Improvements
The beta group and our bug reporters have been working over-time to reduce the crashes and make the whole game smoother. We hope you'll like it!

In v1.1.9 we included a new automated crash reporting system called Crashlytics. This update (v1.2.0) contains the first round of fixes for issues uncovered by Crashlytics.
v1.1.9 added the following new features:
• Zoomable Galaxy Map
You can now manually pinch to zoom the main galaxy map; this can be especially helpful for iPhone/iPod users to get in a little closer to the stars for minute selections.
• Frigate Spam / Frigate Lockdown
We have introduced a new mechanic to help reduce the tactic of using a single frigate to "lock down" a larger fleet in combat. If you try and attack a much larger force than your own (the total production cost of your fleet is less than 1/10 that of the fleet you are attacking), your fleet will immediately flee once encountering the hostile fleet. This rule only applies to moving fleets; fleets stationary at a system will not automatically flee. This is the first revision of this mechanic, we'll be iterating on it in future patches is necessary.
• "Scrap All" Buildings
Need some cash fast? Now you can scrap all buildings of a type throughout your whole empire at once.
• Assign Ship Orders by Name
Have two different kinds of frigates? Now you can assign order to all ships of a certain name. Generals rejoice!
• Fix for the issue with spying introduced in v1.1.8
An issue with being able to properly defend from enemy spies slipped through v1.1.8 testing; this is now fixed and your defensive agents should work properly again.
• Fix for iOS 4 crash
We also introduced an issue where iOS 4 devices would immediately crash on launch. This is now fixed.
• Crashlytics
In our continuing efforts to identify and squash crash bugs we have added Crashlytics bug reporting to SO. If you experience a crash it will automatically send the necessary logs and information our way to help us fix the issue.

• Tutorial!
That's right, its about time we got a real tutorial. If you're new to 4X space games, then tutorial will help ease you into the wonderful world of Starbase Orion. The tutorial is narrated by the very talented Maurice Thomas.
• Leader Maintenance Cost
Leaders now cost an additional 1% of their purchase price per turn in upkeep. So if you bid 600 GC on a leader, it will cost 16 per turn (10+6).
• Starbase Changes
Starbases received a buff to their armor, structure, and weapon slots. The changes were made such that SB1 and SB2 got the most benefit, with SB3 being roughly the same as it was before.
• Weapon and System Design Costs Scale with Ship Control Points
Weapons and ship systems now cost different amounts depending on the CP cost of the hull you build them on. Generally, they are a bit cheaper on frigate, the same on destroyers and cruisers, and more expensive on everything bigger.
• Ship Tweaks
Mammoths now cost 4 CP per ship. Destroyers and Cruisers had their amount of weapon and system slots tweaked.
• Continual AI Improvements
The AI now scouts more aggressively, so it will find all those yummy special planets around it.

• Diplomacy!
Take your intergalactic backstabbing to the next level with an all new, feature rich diplomacy system. Form alliances, trade and research pacts, make new friends by giving them gifts, or new enemies with outrageous demands. It's all here, and it is sure to please.
• Deep Space Jammer
A brand new ship system, the DSJ allows you to hide the details of your fleet from prying eyes while the fleet is in hyperspace.
• Empire Boundaries
The galactic map is now much more colorful, as your empire's influence is now rendered for all to see.
• Sort Colonies By What To Build
This new for the Empire screen allows you to quickly list colonies by what they can build. Want to know which colonies still need to build that Research Center III? Or which ones need to build a starbase? Now you can, quickly and efficiently.
• Quick Change to other Planets in the System
One feature request has been to add a method for quickly switching between planets in a star system in the planet view. Now there is a great new control in the planet view which allows you to do just that.
• Saving Custom Races
There are now 5 "save slots" in the custom race designer, allowing you to quickly and easily save your favorite custom races.

NEW FEATURES IN v1.1.6
• Options, options, and MORE OPTIONS!
Another of the most requested features has been added; more game options! You can now choose between spiral, cluster, and ring galaxies, random or balanced maps, empire and galaxy age, leaders, race picks ( random, no custom, unlimited custom ), wormholes, monsters, system specials and more!
• Leader Bans
Is there a particular leader you can't stand playing against? If so, the new Leader Bans game option is for you. In a Leader Ban game, every player is allowed to ban a single leader from the game.
• AI Bonuses Toggle
In Starbase Orion the higher AI's receive bonuses to help them stay competitive. In v1.1.6, you can now choose to turn these bonuses off, creating a whole new middle tier of AI to play against.
• In-Game Historical Data
For all you number crunchers out there, Starbase Orion now tracks several statistics over the course of the game. From total command points, total population, to number of tech researched. All of this information is available to you in the new HISTORY screen, rendered in graphs for easy tracking. Track how well your allies are doing, or use the new GATHER INTEL spying focus to learn how your enemies are doing.
• Spying Improvements
Lots of player feedback on spying, thank you so much for that! This incorporates several player suggestions; soft caps to spy effectiveness, spy focuses to specify what you want your spies to do, and information gathering through spying.

v1.1.5 is a hot-patch to address issues introduced in v1.1.4. These include:
• NEW FEATURE: Dismissing Spies
You can now dismiss spies in the foreign screen by dragging a block of them onto the dismissal tray.
• AI Spying Redux & AI Leader Bidding
Work on the AI in both continuous and challenging. We pushed it too hard, now we're reigning it back in.
• Leader Balance Tweaks
Gorzhons, Fve Bgeeep, Cerebrum, and Morph have all received minor changes.
• iOS 4.3 is now required
One of the changes we made in v1.1.4 requires functionality added in iOS 4.3. You may need to update iOS to install this update.
NEW FEATURES IN v1.1.4
• Colony and Military Leaders
One of the most requested features makes its Starbase Orion debut in this update! Eighteen heroes from the predictable to the bizarre will join the fray as empires scramble to hold their piece of the galaxy.
• Out of Combat Damage Retention
Previous to v1.1.4, ships damaged in combat would be instantly healed at the end of combat. In v1.1.4, ships now retain their damage even after combat ends. To heal your ships, you need to send them to a friendly system with a starbase. Starbases will heal your ships at a rate specific to the level of the starbase.
• Foreign Contact Rating
One of several changes made to spying, contact rating is a new mechanic which affects how likely it is your offensive spies will succeed. The more colonies you have within contact range of the other empire's colonies, the higher your contact rating will be. The higher your contact rating, the more likely it is your spies will succeed.
• Updated Tech: Colony Security Facility
Colony security facility is now an empire-wide tech; CSFI provides a flat 25% reduction to enemy spy success, CSFII provides a flat 50% reduction to enemy spy success.
• AI Improvements
Continual improvements to the AI help the computer opponents step it up a notch.
• Hi-Definition Graphics
Experience the glory of galactic conquest with full HD graphics for the new iPad!
• Fix for iPod Touch
v1.1.3 included a nasty memory bug which affected iPod Touch users; this is now fixed!

• Custom Starbases
Players can now design custom starbases in the ship designer. Set your weapon and ship systems to best match your fleet tactics.
• Upgradable Ships
Scrap ships directly to production points on a planet, then use that production to quickly build an upgraded ship.
• Precise Orbital Bombardment
Orbital bombardments have been improved; you can now specific generic targets (marines, buildings, population) and you can equip more bombing systems per ship.
• Weapon Damage Modifiers
Weapons now do different damage based upon if they hit shields, armor, or hull, providing more variety and strategic decisions about how to outfit your fleet.
• Civic Funding
Joining Economic Funding and Economic Hoarding is the new Civic Funding; use your planet's production points to increase growth rate.
• Stacking Penalties
Some ship systems have been given a stacking cost penalty; as you stack more of the same item, each new item costs more. This encourages more diverse system configurations, while still allowing those that want to stack the ability to do so.
• New Technologies
Advanced colony ships, Marine Barracks II, Efficient Tax Collectors II, changes to Pacifists and Warlords Overhauls
• Balance Changes
Prior to this update the mechanics favored production/expansionist races. Numerous changes have been introduced to balance the game for other imperial strategies.

*** v1.0.9 is a maintenance update for some critical issues identified v1.0.8 ***
- Bug: If combat concluded while reinforcements are in battle waiting to join, the reinforcements could be lost. This is now fixed.
- Bug: Some MP games are getting stuck on "decompressing turn" after a player is eliminated. One flavor of this was fixed in v1.0.8, a different flavor was reported after v1.0.8. This should now be fixed, and these games should work fine in v1.0.8.1
- Bug: Long-standing "delete multiplayer game bug" is now fixed! (Sometimes deleting a game will put it the "game over" section, but then it would pop back up. Now it stays deleted)
*** Most Notable Changes and Improvements in v1.0.8 ***
- Custom race attribute tweaks!
* Cost values for penalty attributes have been adjusted
* "Repulsive" trait now carries an increased maintenance cost for spies
* "Small Minded Scientists" has been renamed to "Broad Field Experimentalists" and now costs 2 points
* "Small Minded Scientists" has been changed such that you now have less research options at each level and now costs -3 points
* "Shared Intelligence" has been buffed; penalties for low population are less severe and less population is needed to start receiving bonuses
- Lots of user requested new features!
* Adjusted multiplayer turn order such that the last player in a round is the first player to take their turn in the next round, making asynchronous multiplayer up to 2x more efficient
* New ship combat reinforcement rules; when you fly ships into an existing battle, they will be inactive for one turn before committing to battle, at which time you can give them their initial orders
* New scheme for multiplayer match description caption; example: FFA, 409.2: Player1, Player2, Player3, Player4

* If you purchase a building on a planet which is building using a focus, it will now cause an interrupt in turn compression
* The "purchase building" button has been reworked. If you cannot afford to purchase the item, it will be red and if you tap on it a dialog will tell you how much more GC you need. If you can afford to build it, it will be green and tapping will let your purchase it. All other times the button will be hidden.
And, of course, lots of bug fixes!

* Cost values for penalty attributes have been adjusted
* "Repulsive" trait now carries an increased maintenance cost for spies
* "Small Minded Scientists" has been renamed to "Broad Field Experimentalists" and now costs 2 points

- Ship and weapon balance changes! Many players have noted that building lots of missile frigates provided a much larger benefit than building larger ships. Ships have been adjusted to bring these more in-line, allowing greater variety in strategic thinking. Please see the forums for a full list of changes.
- Lots of user requested new features!
* Colonists in transit between planets of different star systems now appear as "transporting" icons on the destination planet
* Defending spies now have a change of reporting enemy spy activity in your empire.
* When an item built is reported in the sitrep, the next item in queue for that planet is also listed in the sitrep
* Weapon and system listing in the ship designer are now sorted such that newer technologies are at the top of the list
* Combat at a system now prevents the planets at that system from transporting colonists off of those world. If you want to engage in scorched earth tactics, you will need to do that before your opponent reaches your colony.
* Added "clear all" and "upgrade all" buttons to the race and ship designer
* Added a cancel button to the research dialog
