Pharagill,
Speaks to your inner child
I’ve just started to use this app, but like it a whole lot already. It turns something like battling depression (a typically miserable endeavor) into an epic adventure. I can see how this app wouldn’t be for everybody, but if you’re a creative or imaginative type, it’s the best. Every day you give yourself power-ups and complete quests that help you on whatever personal journey you may be on. It doesn’t have to be depression; it could be anything you’re struggling with.

The one drawback is that I didn’t care for any of the pre-made “powerpaks” of suggested power-ups, bad guys, and quests. For instance, sometimes a quest just involved completing certain power-ups. I didn’t see the point of that overlapping. Or with the bad guys, sometimes there was no instruction on how to “fight,” or it would be something vague, like “practice self compassion.” The saving grace of all this is that you don’t have to use these and can fully create your own tools to personalize the experience. It took some time but I enjoyed brainstorming my own bad guys with strategies to beat them and creating power-ups and quests that are relevant to my experience. Once I got these set up, the app became a lot more fun and useful.

Overall, I think this is a great app for anyone who wants to add some fun and creativity to their personal struggles. Just be ready to add your own content to the mix.

Best app I’ve used
This app if you actively use it, will be a life saver. I’ve been using it for years off and on. It helps put you in the right frame of mind to take on anything. Chronic Pain, family issues. It I went from a bedridden disfunctional disabled person with a pure negative attitude and absolute hopelessness to someone who was more positive, could deal with my pain and responsibilities and even started helping my own families issues as a true mother and wife. My relationships improved, the pain levels were more manageable and slightly less frequent. Nothing externally changed. My perspective changed and things slowly got better. I wouldn’t say I’m a superbetter person but definitely a better more functional one. The other thing I liked about it. Is that it’s customizable. You can created your own aspects of “the game”. Also, treating it like a game made it fun. Say you are an alcohol and want to put the 12 step program element in your challenges, if they don’t already have a pack for it. You can make one specific for you. Also, being a person with chronic migraines I was able to put in my triggers and plan how do deal with. I would recommend this application for anyone. Even just if you want a superbetter life than you already have.
sriracha2.0,
Great App for Depression
I’ve barely used this app - in fact I just downloaded it today. But I can already tell that it will help me with my depression. I have fairly severe depression, so everything is a battle; therefore, doing these little challenges, like drinking a glass of water, not pinching your fat, hugging yourself, etc. make it feel like I’ve accomplished something, anything. This app makes necessary and helpful tasks into power-ups to be earned, and “bad guys” to be defeated. And when you have absolutely no motivation for anything, the idea of beating a challenge, getting points, and leveling up at least makes it easier to walk my dog, or get off the chair when I can’t seem to move. This may not help everyone, but I think it will certainly help me.
SuperBetterSaves,
A LIFESAVER. To the developer, please invest in keeping it functional
SuperBetter catapulted me out of a deep depression. I tried the app a year ago but it didn’t take. This new version managed to push me out of my funk. Thank you so much, Jane McGonigal, for this app and the insights from your own experience with depression that birthed it.
Every day, I look forward to going on quests and battling my demons.
Unfortunately, five days in with this new version, I am missing some of my current notes (I know I couldn’t keep notes from the old version). I find these notes to be vital benchmarks on how I’m doing as well as a virtuous feedback habit loop. I have had to write my notes in an actual notebook in case more of them go missing.
SuperBetter is an important LIFELINE for me. I hope SuperBetter LLC continues to invest in keeping this app functioning smoothly. SUPERBETTER SAVES LIVES.
sarlachan,
A lot of bugs, inflexibility, and no free trial
I am one of the OG users of SuperBetter and was really excited when I heard it was getting an update. I do like the new UI, much more aligned with current design trends but that’s about all I like.

First, I don’t like that I couldn’t have some type of free trial to test some of the features. At the very least make a free trial if people want to play solo just to check it out. I feel like this is an easy thing to add.

Second, there are a lot of bugs! Notes wouldn’t save, entire plans would go missing, I couldn’t add Power-Ups, Quests, Bad Guys, etc. Way too buggy to use regularly.

Third, the information and standard power-ups etc. make the app really inflexible. It feels like while you advertise the app to be a flexible way to conquer your goals, you really want the user to stay within the pre-designed goals. It really needs more flexibility and ease of use with that flexibility. I want to be able to decide what my own powers and quests are and use the pre-designed ones as inspiration or fillers. This is especially important if you want to market this to groups that want to create their own items specific to their group.

This app has SO MUCH potential but I feel like there’s more focus on it looking like a cool game versus being a useful app, It needs more work before I would consider using this in the classroom.
Caleb890,
Great tool to aid in your recovery
I’d recommend this app for anybody battling depression.
Its task list-based design helps me keep up with wellness routines without getting overwhelmed and shutting down, and it keeps me from feeling stuck in my recovery process.
Not only is it an effective tool to facilitate and aid in my recovery, it’s also great with maintaining mental wellness.

With the next update, I’d want to see these features:

• More interactivity with your allies
- I want to share my custom power ups and bad guys with my allies.
Right now there’s nothing you can really do with them

• Easier customization in creating your own power ups
- Easier bold option.
Right now, if you want to use boldface, you have to use their coding when writing descriptions. A big hassle.
- Easier link inclusion.
Same deal here, must use coding
- Easier paragraph formatting.
Same with above, must use coding with each line you want to create, which is a giant pain.
- No max word count with descriptions in custom power ups.
Writing your description then going back and forth with the error window is a pain.
Tactical Reader,
Super Better for Soldiers
I have been using Super Better after watching the Ted Talk from years ago. This was right after being diagnosed with PTSD and a head injury from an Army deployment. My therapist told me, among many things, I needed to learn how to love myself again. Sounds crazy but Super Better walked me through the process in a winning way! It helps change habits, perspectives and attitudes and develop new and better ones. Rather than just following a list, this app actually helps you achieve more for yourself and others ( attitude, motivation, goals, perspective on daily life and positive steps to take everyday etc.) than any app I have used.
Dragonskinglue,
Seems good, but looks ugly
Nitpicking, but certainly for an app developed for the imaginative, creative type (that are more likely to be designers), the UI can use a better look? My eyes honestly hurt from staring at all those colors. (Color harmony is a thing! You don’t have to use the entire spectrum just because you CAN!)

That aside, pretty recommended. But again could you please consider updating your graphics to a more...modern...look, dear devs? That would be truly appreciated (as currently every time I open the app I let out a big sigh, as if opening a boring booklet about how to wash your hands properly.)

It’s not a game if it looks like homework!
Merekat27,
BEST APP EVER FOR POSITIVE CHANGE
I just happened to stumble on this app. I have become obsessed with finding the perfect app for changing bad habits and goal setting. I have tried practically all of them and have paid for the more popular ones and use them now. This app is mind blowing. It appears to be free (what?!) and even if it’s not I will 100% keep it. It’s just what I have been looking for: an app that motivates me to rid myself of bad habits and create new positive ones. It’s not confusing yet it has great content. It has great information about why you do things (or avoid) it has it all and I’m in love!
Rpjhkid,
I see where this is trying to go I just don’t know if it gets there
This game doesn’t look or feel like a game. There’s no game-like graphics no game story either. It seems like there saying “ hey let’s use game terms to describe your chore list and just doing that will make it more fun”
Also, the article on quests says I have to want to do the stuff on the list. Great, so where does the homework I need to do but don’t want to do fit in?

The pre-set power ups and bad guys aren’t really useful for someone in a wheelchair that I’ve seen. It would be nice to be able to specify some groups that you identify with and have some suggestions come up based on those like mine might be “Christian” and “ differently-abled”
