Description

NOTE: UnitedHealthcare® offers this wellness program to employers; it may be included with your health plan. Confirm your eligibility by checking with your company’s HR representative.

It pays to take steps toward a healthier lifestyle.
Simply put, UnitedHealthcare Motion® 1) gives you three daily walking goals and 2) rewards you financially for achieving them.

Our walking goals are designed to promote health and wellness. Reaching a high daily step count can be important, but there’s more to maximizing the health benefits of walking: Motion’s “FIT” goals are a prescription to move with Frequency, Intensity, and Tenacity every day.

Did you know that even a 1-hour workout may not be enough to reduce health risk factors if the majority of your day is spent sitting? We lose two hours of life for every hour we sit, Dr. James Levine, a professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic, writes in his book “Get up!” Let Motion incent you to get up frequently for brief walks every day.

Money may be a good incentive.
UnitedHealthcare Motion gives you the opportunity to earn over $1,000 per plan year for out-of-pocket medical expenses by doing more of what you may already do: walk. You can earn for one, two, or all three goals each day. Earnings are deposited quarterly into an HRA or HSA, as applicable.

HEALTH APP DATA

With your permission, UHC Motion app reads data from the Health App specific to your workout or exercise activities for the day. Our app uses this data to provide you with additional options to achieve your health and wellness goals.

dlgoff,
Pitiful support for Apple Watch
Like many reviewers, I think the apps UI for Apple Watch is terrible. The step count info given is limited - no countdown to goal completion, no indication of time spent on the current goal - and the step count updates are few and far between. Seems like about a minute between updates. Very annoying when you’re close to the end of a frequency walk. The app also does not make use of the haptics to tell you when a goal is reached or when you can start your next frequency walk - or anything else.
It feels like someone just pushed it out to be able to say they support Apple Watch but didn’t bother to consider how to use it with the Watch or to take advantage of the Watch’s capabilities.
I hope this will improve in future versions.

Update 2020: Apple Watch support is much better now. I never get 0 steps for a minute in the middle of a walk and step updates are somewhat more frequent. Still no signal when you complete a frequency walk, but I do occasionally get notifications when I reach a daily goal - though not always. Also still drops some steps during most minutes so it’s all but impossible to get an intensity walk unless you jog/run. Still, the app is noticeably better than before.
sonotessa,
Not Worth It AT ALL
I have never before written a review for an app, but where do I even begin with this one? We use it for my job, and if I didn’t have the potential to earn money for my HSA, I would have deleted this on day one. The UI with Apple products is pitiful. I have lost more than I have gained with this app and it stresses me out daily. I never know if it's going to correctly count my steps or award me points, and each month, at least 2x per month, I have had to correspond with customer service in order to get back rewards that they didn’t count. Some days I have over 20k steps and the app reports less than 10k. It never matches, and I’ve been kicked out more than I can count. Their answer is always to “delete and redownload”. You’d think a year in there would be some sort of answer to this problem. What’s worse is that I lost out on over $275 when they had the improper information for my HSA and never contacted me to ask why when they tried to deposit the money it didn’t actually deposit… and because it happened in a separate tax year, they’ve NEVER awarded me those funds. So I stepped and stepped and hit every goal for 3+ months to have nothing to show for it. I hate this app. I cannot stress enough that if you DO NOT want to be absolutely ruined every evening trying to figure out why it isn’t syncing or connecting, then don’t download this. It’s seriously not worth it. Do better, UHC Motion. Your customer service + app integration are BOTH despicable.
CP274638,
If you have Apple Watch, don’t bother
NOT WORTH THE FRUSTRATION. It’s been years of these complaints in the reviews, but it case you were wondering, this app is still horrendous on Apple Watch. Glitches constantly, sends notifications that make no sense, doesn’t update at a speed needed for fitness tracking, and will tell you you’ve hit goals when you haven’t. You have to sit and wait for it to sync with the phone app, sometimes takes 5 minutes because there’s no way for you to make it sync on command. Customer service is useless, admits it’s a issue and just tells you to check the phone app for more accurate data - but how can it have accurate data when it won’t sync with the watch?! Phone app also doesn’t show walk progress and doesn’t update often, so it’s useless when trying to hit a walk goal.

The Frequency goal itself is problematic because I can be on my feet all day, walk over 12k steps, and not hit a single frequency walk because I haven’t done 300 steps in 5 minutes spaced an hour apart. Clearly designed for folks sitting at a desk, not those trying to be truly active throughout the day.

I recommend UHC throw the whole watch app away and just utilize the tracking data from Apple directly. My activity app already tracks steps, frequency, workouts, etc, and I already had to agree to share that data to use the Motion phone app, so why add this useless layer of bugs on top?
FitzTantrum,
Frustrating
I understand you can’t give weight to workouts because not all compatible fitness trackers have the capability but it’s disheartening to burn 300+ calories on a workout and see that according to the app, you didn’t do a thing.

When it comes to walks, wher this app is for, its incredibly frustrating problem is it doesn’t give you any sort of heat map about when your steps will begin to expire. Particularly with the Tenacity 3000 steps in 30 minute goal. I had to do a really quick errand at the bank which was more thank 1500 steps. The line was a bit longer than I anticipated but got in then out and when I was almost back, I noticed that my steps were frozen at 2700 steps because I was too long at the bank. My steps were being erased right as I was making them. Another time, it was erasing my steps on a walk where I made a few very quick stops on the way and I got near home, I was at 2900 steps.

Figured I might as well finished. 900 steps later I gave up and stopped chasing the dollar. I can understand the rules of the 30 minutes but it’s maddening not knowing how much longer you need to walk before your steps start going back up again. This has made me much less inclined to reach the goals and certainly the tenacity one. It really makes me regret signing up for this program. In the end, cool I got an Apple Watch, but it’s annoying to pay it off.
Sharonlital,
Frustrating to say the least
I was excited to use this app to get credit for daily exercise that I do anyway. I use an Apple Watch and make my three circles every day so I thought no problem. Well, this app is very slow and does not keep up with current step counts when trying to make the 6 movements.I would end up moving around and running and by the time it would show I made the 300 steps I was over 400. The last straw was when I had made my FIT goals for the day on my watch but to no avail could the app my phone sync so it showed that I only did 5 (300 steps) not 6! I took a picture of my watch showing my achievement of FIT but not on my phone so I only earned $2. not $3.00. It is so frustrating to make sure I run around 6X a day and not get credit for it. At that point when I was not able to sync my real results I gave up. So frustrated and a feeling of being cheated. Who cares about a $1? It’s the principle involved. Don’t offer up an app that does not record the actual results. I uninstalled the app at that point. By the way the app also ate away at my Apple Watch battery.
I think it’s great for insurance programs to offer incentive for exercise. I exercise every day and have for many years. I eat very healthy, plant-based, I don’t drink so is this going to help me? Not sure but liked the idea of saving $. Please fix this app to respond faster to results and actually sync correctly.

Apple Watch
After 2 weeks of use with my new Apple Watch 6, I can say that there has not been much of an issue syncing between the watch and the phone, you just need to time them together to do so.
The motion watch app does a decent job of reminding you to do your frequency walks.
As of yesterday I added another pedometer app to be able to better track total daily steps at a glance on my home watch face vs having to always enter into the Motion app. It would be nice if the Motion app for the Apple Watch was able to provide more info at a glance on the watch face like shown in the rings once you enter the app. For instance when using watch faces such as the “Infograph Modular”, the large center complication could easily display the frequency ring with its 6 segments, as well as rings for intensity and tenacity.
It would also be nice if the motion app kept track of steps more in real time vs every minute or so, as well as more accurately, mirroring that of the watch itself.
All in all though I have still been able to hit all three areas successfully while earning the dollars each day. The above comments would just bring the quality of the app to the next level.

Poor Step Tracker, Makes getting the daily goals unrealistic.
We have UHC healthcare for our insurance. As part of our benefit we can use this to get a Fitbit or Apple Watch. Wife got a Fitbit and I got the Apple Watch Series 8. Wife Fitbit works great tracking her steps. The Apple watch step tracker in this application is very poor. The Frequency takes longer to track steps to “meet” the goal. So I end up going farther distance to hit the goal. Wife hits her Frequently goal a good min and a half sooner than I do and we are walking side by side. Today I went for a walk and the Intensity tracker said I hit my goal of 3023 step in 30 min. However it took me 1 hr 26 min and 28 seconds for a total of 3.01 miles before the Intensity tracker ever showed me as hitting that goal. So needless to say on a day to day basis hitting that “Intensity goal” is next to impossible at this time. I really hope the developers will fix this major issue. Especially given I am tying to pay for the Apple Watch with the walk it off program sponsored by UHC. Unless they fix it I am not going to be able to meet the Intensity goal each day. I just had open heart surgery a few weeks ago. So please fix the step tracking function for this app and the Apple Watch series 8 please.
Jhlo,
Inaccurate, loses data. Difficult to sync
Like many of you, I use this to get a discount on my health insurance premiums. At first it didn’t connect with my Apple Watch requiring me to delete it and reload it numerous times before it worked. Meanwhile I lost a week of steps that could’ve counted. I saw on one site to “sync at least once a week…” during which I lost another week of data since the rep told me it has to be synced daily, and frequently to avoid losing data.
You have to keep the UMR app open on BOTH the Watch and the phone for it to count, so don’t bother closing windows randomly without making sure those apps are open (and using battery life)
The step counter lags the Apple Watch step counter, sometimes by up to 25%, so you have to overshoot the 10,000 step goal as measured by the Apple Watch to make sure you get credit.
Sometimes the sync doesn’t work, so you have to swipe over and over, and then check your UMR steps, and then if it’s inaccurate, do it again.
I should expect as much from an insurance company to make it difficult to get a premium break, but this is quite aggravating. I suppose it’s par for the course since they also reject claims on a routine basis as well
vwbus23,
I would give it 1/2 star or less if possible
While the way it tracks your goals is good for the program to earn money...nothing about this app says we know what we are doing, care what we are doing, or that we are a massive billions of dollar company that can’t make an app to work. Every time I open it, it freezes. Usually on the second try it works but not always. Sometimes it’s 3-4 times before it opens. And forget syncing. That often takes anywhere from 4 to 15 times to sync. And if it does work it takes me so long that by the time it finally works you don’t even give a crap that you walked 5 steps that day. Customer service is as awful as you expect from a healthcare provider. Just delete and re-install and set up the app is the answer for everything it seems. And forget it you have proof from other trackers when you do or the dollars earned. If it isn’t synced they will go back a few days is all. Heaven forbid you take care of those paying thousands of dollars to you who get ripped out of like $3 due to you app that never works. If it wasn’t for getting a few bucks through the year and competition at work, I would smash my phone to rid it of the app (if there wasn’t some other way to delete it.

Notice all the complaints about the same glitches. Notice how far back they go. All one star reviews. I have the exact same things happening: frequency ring closes on watch after duplicating or triplicating walks. Slow syncing. And, my recent issue: the app just closes and is frozen on 5 frequency walks. I’m tired of emailing and calling support about these problems. They don’t respond to emails, and when calling, they tell me the frequency ring problem is a “known issue.” Now that I read the reviews and see how long these things have been issues it’s really disheartening. I pay thousands of dollars in insurance premiums, and have had to pay a few more thousand in medical bills. I’m trying to get over a thousand “back” this year and the developers of this app are making it really difficult with all the unfixed long term glitches that they know about. Come on, just fix these things and stop putting automatic replies on reviews asking people to email you and refer to the review. I’ve done that with no reply. It is really sad and pitiful that I continue using this app in hopes to save some money. This is what my healthcare has come to.
