Moment65,
You can become world class
You can learn how to play world class backgammon just by playing against this app.

When I started playing this app my average score was over 20, which is rated as beginner level.

Now I play at expert level. My average is approaching world class level. I already play a lot of world class level matches now. I even play a surprising number of games that are rated at world champion level. I still have some error-filled games that lower my average, but I don't make many bad moves that are considered blunders.

I still lose most of the time when I play games at world class level. It’s not me claiming that skill level. It’s the app rating my games at that level.

It can get to be maddening, which is likely part of the reason why people insist that the app cheats. Another reason for the claims of cheating is that certain things seem suspicious.

In end-game situations when I have an 11 out of 36 chance to hit what I need to win, I can miss on 20 of those situations in a row. I’ve kept track. The computer never seems to go on those long stretches of missing, but I haven’t tracked that stat.

My actual belief, when calm, is that the app probably doesn’t cheat, but it definitely seems to. My strategy at this point is to keep improving until I play almost every game at a world class or world champ rating. The best thing about this app is that it can actually be used to accomplish that goal.
WN,
The Best Backgammon Bot and Includes Two Player Setting
This is the best automated backgammon app I have found, and with the premium version, you are also able to use it as a board and play against another player in-person on the same device.

The computer opponent difficulty-setting is based on gameplay, not on optimizing dice rolls in favor of the computer. This makes for more-realistic games, better learning, and less frustration, as it’s the play that determines the outcome rather than a fluke roll.

The tutor on this app is great as well because it shows not just the top move, but also other viable moves and their statistical potential for winning and winning gammons and backgammons. I do wish on occasion that there were an option to click for a bit of explanation as to why one move is statistically more advantageous than another, but that is a small quibble for an otherwise excellent game, and one does pick up on things the more one plays.

The interface for this game is excellent. It is smooth and natural to play, without clunky extra buttons to click and without moving automatically or penalizing you for a typo (very handy if you’re playing on a small screen or get jostled and accidentally tap the wrong point or piece). In addition, there are several settings to tweak speed, layout, movement, and available-move options to your liking.

I highly recommend this app, and it is the one I recommend whenever friends ask for a good app to play and to learn backgammon.

The best backgammon app
Playing against the computer is challenging and fun. You set the level of proficiency of the computer, and after the game, your play is rated. I am now one level below the top. I find that on days when I play poorly, I am generally not as sharp at other things. The converse is also true. If you want to become a good player, this app is for you. It’s algorithm judges your move basis on probabilities. You can pretty much predict when it will accept your double. There are multiple options for “tutors” which give you the percent chance of winning with various moves. You can make the tutor as invasive as you like. I have improved just playing many games. It’s fun to see how the app rates you at the end: Advanced, Expert, World Class, Intermediate, etc.
I have had the upgraded version for st least 5 years. It is a gem. If you like backgammon, you will, love this app.
BeBopLives,
Best IOS Backgammon Game
After trying many backgammon apps on my iPad over the last few years, I finally found this one that has the most real dice. After deleting about six apps I found one I liked, but it would let me win at times and have outlandish rolls at times to win. I could predict I would loose a match after about five rolls in the first game. With this app I truly feel the dice are more random/fair. I also enjoy that it will offer a correction to a move I make. All the other apps I played expert and found them easy. Not here; this app gives me a great game at advanced. As a child I usually won all board games with school friends family and neighbors. This truly is the best app I could have hoped for and I look forward to getting more XG apps.

Computer Cheats to maintain its ELO
The game is glitchy it makes moves for you and you don’t see what your roll was. Sometimes you get to see your rolls and other times you don’t. Sometimes the computer does your move for you and you can’t control the move. The computer gets the craziest rolls to maintain it’s ELO rating. If you are in a race, the computer will get doubles to beat you to get back to its home board. I would be rolling in off the bar with 4 open pips and it would take 3-4 rolls, but it would take the computer 1-2 on only one open pip. The roll would be so fantastic, it would roll in, hit 2 of my checkers, and make it back to its home board. I am not exaggerating. I would be playing at a world class level, but lose to the computer that is set to a Intermediate level. It’s extremely frustrating playing a rigged game. How do you know when you are ready for the next level? Simply you don’t, because the game cheats to maintain it’s ELO. Where is the skill in that? I just deleted this cheating game. Please don’t waste your money.
Prince of Darkness666,
Fantastic
Put it on the tutorial and you will improve dramatically. No, the dice aren’t rigged. You will find that making the correct move essentially means that more of the most likely rolls will help you. The dice seem rigged, as if the computer always gets a good roll, because the number of good rolls (of all possible) is higher. Pay attention to the cube to understand why opening moves change. If you’re within one game of winning the tournament, the ideal opening move might not be the Sam as when you’re starting out at 0 games each. The AI is phenomenal and makes me believe that neural network programming will some day solve all our problems or enslave humankind. I tip my hat to the developers and recall paying 10x this price for a version of Snowie back in the day. It’s humbling, but it’s a great way to learn.

Good Math, Bad Cheating
Yeah yeah everyone calls the game a cheat on the hardest setting, right? Okay, well I’m a computer engineer turned professional gambler… I like to pretend I know a thing or two about probabilities. The game cheats, 100%. I’m lucky enough to have a former world champion turned sports bettor in my circle, whom also believes the game quite obviously cheats. I just don’t get why they had to go the extra mile to cheat… I’m aware of the statistics feature of the game and how they don’t accurately represent what I’m referring to. I also know that recording hundreds of hours of play would prove it, but I’m not going too my to waste my time proving something that in the ends is worth nothing. Time = EV. Game cheats. Good for learning proper play with hints on, but other than that, doesn’t make learning very fun when it cheats. Just makes me close the game and regret spending money on it.
USN Seabee,
Great BG app, but zero support and doesn’t work on iOS 16
I’ve enjoyed playing on XG Mobile for 3-4 years. The computer opponent at the higher settings is very challenging. The computer offers mostly good suggestions for you to consider playing. The movement of checkers is very quick - better than any other BG apps. I have played thousands of games on it and I would give it 5 stars.

However, there is no support from the app developers. I’ve emailed them multiple times, once about a year ago, and twice more recently after my phone updated to iOS 16.2 and then 16.3, and the app crashes constantly. I’ve had to revert to other BG apps instead of my paid-for XG Mobile. This is infuriating.
bunzolama,
Useless on iOS 16.2 - iPhone 14 Pro
This is the one and only favorite game that I play on my iPhone. But ever since upgrading my phone the app has become worthless. For one thing, the tutor no longer works, so you’re not going to learn anything regardless of any mistake. And the other annoying thing is that you can’t see the dice that you roll on your turn!
I’ve tried reinstall as well as installing on other phones and got the same results.

What the heck is going on with the development of this thing? I’m amongst the customers who is using the paid version. Though currently I can’t exactly use this thing.
Let’s get to work people! Waiting here. Tick tick…
Uberwhale,
In the most competitive set the app is rigged to win
You are warned. The dice is rigged as you dial up the app’s “skill level” Be prepared to be frustrated by how incredibly lucky the app is at the highest setting. I have experienced this over and over, after being app will immediately come off the bar and hit your blot and cover. Whereas in similar circumstances I am more likely than not be struck on the bar. The app claims only the most advanced players can win at that level. That is crap. Only few luckiest players would win consistently. It would be complicated to program changes in playing skills, whereas fiddling with the dice rolls would be straightward.

I now have played over 400 games at the highest level. The dice statistics says it all. The app has a 7% advantage in getting off the bar.
