Description

Constance, Billie and Sergeant Block are back in this follow-up to the award-winning Couch to 5K® training app (2012 Appy Award for best Healthcare & Fitness app). Designed to continue the training experience for people who finish the Couch to 5K plan, or for those who are already 5K-ready, this app uses motivating virtual coaches to get you ready to run a 10K (6.2-mile) race in 9 weeks and it is now available FREE!

Spend just 25 to 70 minutes, three times a week, for nine weeks, and you’ll be 10K-ready!

Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

The 5K to 10K coach you select talks to you during your workouts. To save your battery, 5K to 10K sends audio notifications when your screen is locked or another app is in use.

To be sure you hear the coach during your workout, please do the following:
• Turn on Notifications permissions
• Turn on the hardware ring/silent switch (no red showing)
• Turn your ringer volume up
• Turn off Do Not Disturb (swipe up for Control Panel and the moon button should not be white)
• Within the app, in Settings > Workout Options, be sure the Trainer Volume is up

Without granting notification permissions, during a workout you can click the lock icon at the top left to keep the app active and still hear the coach.

carlajeanius,
Good training app with some small hiccups
This app has been great for training. The only things I don’t like are that if you’re playing music through another app, the coach doesn’t signal out loud. I still get the notifications on my watch so it’s okay but I wish I could hear my pace and stats and such during the run too. Also I don’t like that it’s strictly minute based instead of distance based. It’s assuming I’m running a 10min mile so it ends at 60min for 6 miles. I’m a little slower than that so I won’t be at 6 miles by the end of this training. But it’s free and it’s training and I’m improving so overall it’s a good app and I’m happy with it.
astveyoobcxfjjvf,
Doesnt work
This app does not work at all. The couch to 5k app works amazingly and this wasn’t next step. This version is still completely outdated, the GPS works but in the log your pace averages don’t actually match up. It keeps telling me my average running pace is something like 3.5 minute or 5.5 minutes which is impossible for me especially considering it’s giving me the correct distance over the run. I also know for a fact that I average a 10 minute mile. I have emailed support several times and they keep giving me the run around like asking me to run in a more open space. I run exactly where I ran every day using couch to 5k with zero problems. They need to just stop avoiding it and update this app. I’m very much a person that’s motivated by forward progress and this app not working has definitely slowed down my progress. I will likely switch to a different app for my 5k to 10K training after I back peddle trying to get my 5k time back up after having so many glitchy disappointing runs with this app, my progress has digressed. Really disappointed and even more annoyed that customer service is putting the problem on me.
goodwitchofthemidwest,
Too finicky to be useful
The app requires you to have your phone with the ringer on, screen permanently unlocked and only works with Apple Music. My phone has been on silent since 2012, and if I run with my screen unlocked, I’m begging for issues (workout paused, skips ahead, skips back, etc). I don’t care about not being able to use other music apps as I use Apple Music but I care very much about having to use it within the app which means I can only listen to my playlists and in the order I put them together, not shuffled. The workouts are good and offer a great variety, but if I have to follow all these rules to get to them (and then they might be skipped around) what’s the point? I’m not bothering with contacting support.

I just use Garmin Connect to build workouts lifted directly from the app. At least then I know I won’t have any issues.
Slaad123,
Please fix the bugs!
I L-O-V-E-D the couch25K app. Completed it & enjoyed getting healthier. I’m absolutely BAFFLED as to why this follow-up app is so dysfunctional. It constantly notifies me to turn on “background app refresh” in settings when the background app refresh is already on and my phone is fully charged. The whole point is to have a little coach in your ear when you’re running, but it doesn’t give audio cues unless you have the phone open in your hand, and the music doesn’t play properly. I’m guessing the dysfunction is related to the background app refresh” bug, but I’m not a programmer so what do I know? I also really liked the variety of coaches (Zombies & Unicorns!) on the C25K app & would like to see that added as well. I just know I want this app to work as great as C25K did. Dear Active, Please, Please, fix it!!!
Bostnwhalr,
Love this app but one minor annoyance
Overall, I’m a big fan of this app. I got started with the Couch to 5K app which was perfect. This one is almost as good, though there is one problem. When I am running, sometimes you cannot hear the coach prompting you to alter your pace throughout the work out. I’m not sure why that is but it can be a little bit annoying because you have to check your phone from time to time. I think this happens when the screen is off but the app is still running.

Other than that, it is a great app. Hopefully they can fix this.
Siouxdemona,
Love this program!
I’ve used the couch to 5k app to get back running after pregnancy and injuries, and now I’m using it to build up endurance for longer distances. I love that it eases the runner into safe progression.
I would like to see:

More integration with treadmill. When I manually add my distance it gives me a pop up that my stats are erased. This is ok as I track stats with other apps.

More coaching during the run. For instance, I was distracted at the beginning of one of my runs and missed the instruction for what a tempo run is. As someone who didn’t do track in high school and basically just goes out and runs I don’t know what some terms are. I would have liked that instruction in my ear as I ran.

Regardless, I feel like this is a safe progression that will keep me from being injured by overdoing it! I have recommended the couch to 5k to new runners and I’d recommend this one too!!
sydneyc w,
It’s okay
It’s an okay app, but I wish it were updated like Couch to 5K. I’m sure that one is far and away more popular, so that one gets more of the developers’ attention, but it wouldn’t take a whole lot to make this one better. I’d appreciate some definitions here since I’m not super experienced in running other than C25K. Is there a difference between a jog and a steady run? What’s a tempo run? How much effort should I be exerting during a fast run interval? I know I can wing it and it will probably be fine but I’d just like more information available through the app.
LA Angel Baby,
Good App
I like this app, it is very good at getting you to be a better runner. It’s challenging for someone that does not like to run and wants to start. I know this app is for people begging to run longer distance than a 5k, but more information while running would be good at this point. Tell the time you have left in a section is useful & not just “you are 1/2 way”. Also, how fast your running pace is, would be good so when you are supposed to run faster “tempo run” or “fast run” you know if you are pushing yourself.
Mr. E Machine,
So good I wish they had a half marathon app!
I always hated running. In high school I ran a 15-minute mile. At the age of 30 I started using Couch to 5k and saw great results. I was able to run my first official 5k in 32 minutes after finishing the program. I bumped up to this 10K program and the results are getting even better. The tempo runs and fast runs are killer at first, but they improve your overall endurance. I’m in week 6 and I’m sure I’ll hit the 10K mark by week 8.
Friarfraust,
Not as good as the original
Couch to 5k is a 5star app, this is a solid 3. It has bugs, for example I just set a new best pace but it still has an older run set as best pace even though I knocked 40s off the time.

Also the audio cues DO NOT WORK while in the run. The app says you need to turn off vibrate only and adjust the volume but that doesn’t fix the issue. And it’s not an issue in the first app so why would it be in this one?

Also the resolution is different, almost zoomed in more or something. Overall, 3 stars... I’d pay $10 to have this app exactly like the first.
