Description

Workout with your Concept 2, WaterRower or FluidRower rowing machine. Be guided by world-class athletes and instructors. Follow structured training programs to improve yourself and your times or just choose your own workout. asensei customizes challenges to meet your capability and pushes you to your potential.

asensei guides and monitors your practice on and off your rowing machine. More than a workout, this is a series of lessons - build strength and fitness alongside skill and technique as you are guided, monitored and corrected through these programs by your very own personal coach, asensei.

asensei talks to the monitor on your rowing machine, reads force curves, analyzes your performance and uses that to inform your practice. Are you losing power at higher stroke rates? Are you losing length when you’re tired? Do you find it hard to hold lower stroke rates consistently? Are you rushing the recovery? Compensating for poor leg drive with over-use of your arms?

asensei knows. And she’ll be sure to let you know.

Practice. Perfected.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING:

“I was fortunate enough to have great coaches from the very beginning of my rowing career. This meant I wasn’t taking thousands of bad rowing strokes, ingraining bad habits. The potential for asensei to provide quality feedback before bad habits are formed is really exciting", Helen Glover, 2x Olympic Gold Medallist and World #1 Rower.

"Just when you thought (sports) technology couldn't get any cooler, along comes asensei", CBS Television

"... the next frontier in the fitness tech revolution ... a wildly ambitious goal ... able to guide you through everything from form and recovery to metrics and goals while improving your individual results ... future of personal training", Men's Health

Here's what users had to say:

"someone keeping an eye on you the whole time is really cool because ... it keeps you honest, keeps you on track in a way that I don't think a coach normally can unless you are doing a one on one session, so it was the benefit of a one on one, with the class dynamic, which I really like!"

"It's a cool product. I've never ever seen anything like that. In 5 minutes I learned how to row, I thought I was doing it right, but I wasn't"

"(asensei) said don't worry there's a bunch of exercises I'm going to give to you afterwards that are going to help you on that. ... that's amazing. ... this is not just about now, it's like building a relationship."

Choose Workouts from the Hey asensei [+] menu, then hit the search icon in the top left.

BETTER WORKOUT SUMMARIES

The workout summaries now include the same 'sharing' cards as you see immediately after a workout. These allow you to see the workout stats at a glance, and you can share them from here at your leisure too.

The share cards that show the interval breakdown should now display the exact value of the interval (e.g. a 30s interval will show as 30s rather than 30.1s as it sometimes did previously). This will also apply to the data shared with the concept 2 Logbook.

ENABLING (APP)AREL UPDATES

The asensei app can now see and update the firmware on the latest versions of the asensei (app)arel.

2. a card including the workout description has been added - also shows the active rowing stats.

SHARE MORE

The post-workout sharing screen data is now more consistent with the entries in the Concept 2 Logbook.

The first workout stats card now displays only the 'active rowing' part of the workout and doesn't include rests, warmups or cooldowns. This means it reflects the 'performance' part of your workout rather than the overall session. This is consistent with the Concept 2 workout summary. Details below:
* TIME - duration of your rowing during the active rowing part of a workout
* AVE SPLIT TIME - your average split time during the active rowing part of a workout
* DISTANCE (M) - distance rowed during the active rowing part of a workout
* CALORIES - calories burned during the active rowing part of your workout.

Overall session details are still captured and broken out on a second stats card.
* OVERALL TIME is the total duration rowed in the workout, including active rowing and rowing during rest periods, warmups and cooldowns.
* OVERALL DISTANCE is the total distance rowed in the workout, including active rowing and rowing during rest periods, warmups and cooldowns.
* REST TIME - is the time rowed during your workout, but excluding the active rowing - so this is your time spent in warmups, cooldowns and rowing in rest periods.
* REST DISTANCE - is the distance rowed during your workout, but excluding the active rowing - so this is your time spent in warmups, cooldowns and rowing in rest periods.

A third stats card shows some additional stats for your session. These are for the active rowing part of the workout only, not for the rests, warmups or cooldowns.
* AVERAGE STROKE RATE
* STROKE COUNT
* CALORIES PER HOUR
* AVERAGE WATTS

A 4th stats card is similar to the first stats card, showing details of the active rowing, but displays drag factor instead of calories.

Note that you may still see some discrepancies between the data shown on these cards and the PM5 since asensei does not reset the PM5 at the start or the end of a workout session. asensei does not capture any meters/time rowed outside a workout, even if the app is open.

1.16.0
2021-09-14
WORKOUT ON MORE DEVICES, WITH MORE CONTROL

* You can now workout with the popular WaterRower and FluidRower rowing machines, as well as Concept 2 rowergs. WaterRowers require an S4 Monitor and a Bluetooth ComModule, FluidRowers need a Bluetooth console and Concept 2 machines need a PM5 monitor.
* Manually reset your goals. If your circumstances change, if you've been out injured or off the erg for a while, or you just want to start afresh, you can ask asensei to start learning from scratch. Your workout history remains safely intact so you will always have a record of your performances.
* Take your goal setting data with you across multiple iOS devices - when you login to a new device your goals now come with you. Note: workout data that can be retrieved is limited to those saved with the new version of the app so results may vary across devices at first.

EASIER TO FIND YOUR WORKOUTS

* The Up Next screen now displays the program that your workout is from.
* Programs are listed in a consistent order to make it easier to find your workouts.
* Free trial programs are no longer shown in the program list when you are a member.

KAIZEN, CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

* Fixed a bug that could allow accidental re-connection to other rowing machines in the vicinity
* The asensei challenge now works correctly with WaterRower and FluidRower machines

WORKOUT PLANNERS

If you wish to find out more about the workouts in a program you can as we are adding links to the program planners from within the app. To view a planner hit Hey asensei [+] button, then choose Workouts and tap on the program you wish to view. 1.14.1
2021-02-01
Small improvements in this release:

KAIZEN

Concept 2 Logbook integration improvements which should prevent the appearance of negative rest distances and times in the logbook. These issues can occur when the PM5 is reset during a workout, including when the user programs it manually (which we don't recommend).

Bluetooth timeout at the time of disconnect/reconnect increased to try and make this more robust and better logging added to debug.

Ash Majumdar,
In the words of Huey Lewis - “I want a new drug”
Yes, after two sessions I can’t wait to get on my rower again. I just bought my first rower Concept2 during this pandemic. I tried it at the gym but wasn’t really thrilled. I looked at the Hydrow, which though is beautiful , but is heavy and had way to many workout choices. I couldn’t see my saying commuted to a monthly pay service until I found Asensei. Once I got my rower it sat there for a few days. I read the manual and lethargically tried to play a game. I was looking for a coaching experience like the hydrow on a lake and then I found Asensei. I thought I will give it a try. I tried it for the first time last night and when Eric said that try rowing three times a week, I was like no way, I am coming back tomorrow before I go to the gym. Great app. Yes the pairing was confusing as my iPad was already connected to ErgData, but I figured it out. Same goes for how to find settings such that I know how to upload to Concept2 logbook. The chat setting is not the most intuitive but once you figure it out. It is okay. I will be signing up soon :)
BWaggers,
One of the best fitness apps out there
I purchased a Concept 2 rower about a year ago, and while I was using it on and off, I found it difficult to get into any kind of structured workout routine. It was difficult to get motivated to row.

So, I started to look for an accompanying app, and found Asensei. I have now been using Asensei for several months (first the free trial, then the paid subscription version). For me it ticks all the right boxes. Structure, motivation, teaching technique (useful even though I rowed in college - 2 decades ago - but valuable for all experience levels), and a good variety of training plans. It integrates seamlessly with my Concept 2, and accompanying logging software (Concept 2 logbook then to Strava and Garmin Connect).

It took a bit of time to get used to navigating certain parts of the app, finding the best programs etc., but overall it’s easy to use and comprehensive for my needs.

I haven’t tried all of the trainers (yet), but absolutely love Eric Murray’s workouts, and have just started another of his programs. He talks just the right amount, enough to motivate but not too much to become distracting/ annoying, and the variety of his workouts helps keep the training fresh. He’s also helping me to achieve new PBs.

So, while I rarely write reviews, I wanted to post this one to hopefully help others who may be looking for a tool to help take their rowing and fitness to the next level. Keep up the good work Asensei!
Lholleran,
Terrific coaching, super high quality
I’ve had a Concept 2 tower in my basement for about a year, and while I’ve had fun hacking around on it, I knew there was more to rowing than my clumsy efforts. I just didn’t know how I would learn. As a former division 1 athlete (in a field sport, not in rowing!), I am used to being coached and am motivated by feedback and improvement. I was skeptical that an app could provide the coaching and feedback necessary for true form mastery (that might be an overstatement at this point, but I am getting there!) and performance improvement, but Asensei truly makes it happen. I am so impressed and delighted. Watching Eric through the workouts makes it easy to mimic good form and figure out where I have hang ups. He is a wonderful mix of low pressure and high motivation. This is truly an excellent stand-in for having an actual coach and an actual team to train with. It has made me want to try this out on the water! Thanks so much for delivering such a high quality experience.
Contented Reader,
Motivating!
Two years ago, my husband and I bought a rower as our Christmas gift to one another. I used it faithfully for about a month and then didn’t really use it again until late the next summer when my two young boys cleaned my clock climbing our local mountain. Determined to get in shape after years of chasing after little kids and not exercising, I returned to the rower. It wasn’t until I heard about and started using asensei though that I truly started using the rower in the best way. As a mom of those two little boys who works and has a small farm, I don’t have the mental energy to design a workout plan. Asensei does that for me. The coaching is great! I love all the options and access to multiple coaches. This is the only exercise plan I have ever stuck with. I am set to hit my million meter mark just after the new year. I think asensei is definitely worth the price and their customer service is awesome!
Privatemcswag,
Trouble renewing subscription
I used this app and loved it for a year. When it expired and I went to renew I used Apple Pay and it did not load on my app as expected. Contacted customer service multiple times via their email support and still have not gotten a response and it has been several days. Very poor customer service! If I don’t get access in the next day, I will be forced to contact my credit card company to let them know. Update, they responded via email last night that there was an issue with multiple accounts due to new email, but still not telling me how to fix. I created a new account with new email, but still not getting program loaded despite payment. Ughhh!

Update: yay! Customer support came through and all my issues are resolved!
Manish Malik,
UI needs more work; overall seems promising
My initial review for this app in less than 30 mins of opening it was: “The UI of the app doesn’t cater to situations where I stop a video in between and want to come back to it. I started with the first video itself - in 30 seconds I realized I needed to position the phone better in front of the rowing machine, so I chose “stop” on the video thinking that I’d come back to it.”

As I played with the app more, I realized that the landscape mode didn’t show all the menu options on screen. Swipe more etc and you’ll get to “workouts”. The UI assumed that the user would be familiar with available options when they go to first video. Also a nit: “+” is usually seen as a symbol to “add” something, not to bring up menu (like in the app).

Anyways, the app’s offering looks promising overall. I have seen 2 introductory videos yet, and also happened to read their comments in the c2forum. The company seems committed to making good coaching accessible.
Zeusman56,
This is great
Stuck at home under virus lockdown, I was looking for a way to get some cardio without making my knees worse, so I decided to get a rowing machine. Found asensei in the App Store, and decided to give it a try. It is fantastic—so well done, and what a gift to have a world class athlete coaching you every step of the way. I think good for both beginners (like me) and experts. The Bluetooth link to my rowing machine works perfectly and allows the app to track my progress and adjust accordingly. Eric Murray is a natural teacher, communicates exactly what to do and in a very pleasant, encouraging way. It’s a freemium model, but I immediately signed up for the one year paid program as soon as I completed the free portion. I can’t imagine doing this without asensei, especially as a newbie who needed to learn how to do things properly. This is a 5+.
The Glacier,
I thought I knew how to row
After having my rower for about a year now, I would hop on twice a week and try to beat my previous 2k time. I didn’t think there was much more to it, but after just doing a 20 min session at 20 strokes per minute, I feel like I got a great workout and was able to actually focus on good technique. This is a fantastic program and I can’t wait to see where I’m at after this 6 week program and then try some of the other workouts. I’m also pretty impressed that this level of live coaching is free. The only complaint I have is not being able to select my own music. I could turn on an external radio/speaker, but somehow being able to do that within the app or alongside it would be fantastic. This is a really cool app, and Eric is a great and effective coach.
Slotdump,
Great does not describe this App!
I am completely new to rowing and had been looking for a an app to help me be more consistent and powerful on this beast of a rower. Eric’s class, while I’m only halfway through it keeps me progressing and hitting new PR’s that I was not getting trying to do it by myself. Hit a new PR on Eric’s “Almost 2K” workout today!

I am in my late 40’s so it’s not too late for anyone to get moving. The app has worked flawlessly and I have to say I’ve never looked so forward to what workout or tip is next. The individual workouts are fun as well and I do them in between Eric’s sessions to reinforce what I learned. Also they are adding content and Cant wait until the Darkhorse content hits as well.

Get the app, get rowing, and watch yourself transform your technique and health!
muzepost,
I’m complete data...useless for Strava
Done the intro workouts, fun setup and the coach is a touch. This is almost a home run....almost. I may do a few more but won’t pay unless they fix the upload to your log book to include full statistics of your work out.

Like many of us, I like to track my workouts with Strava and use the relative effort feature to track my workouts and progress. This app does not upload all the data from your row, in particular your heart rates through out the work out, so Strava does not track it correctly. The info it uploads to your c2 log book is extremely basic. Essentially just distance and time. So this week so far Strava thinks I’m behind in my weekly efforts even though I’ve done 2 work outs.

This translates to any App you may use to track your exercise, the info that is uploaded to your c2 log is extremely minimal. The app itself doesn’t even have the ability to show you a break down of your work out, just a little blurb about how you did.

I hope this update this in the future. There is a lot of promise here. I’m frankly amazed there are so many 5 star reviews, when many other rowing apps that will track this data easily just get absolutely slammed in the comments sections...
