Rintheva,
Difficulty connecting
I have to turn my watch off or reinstall the app every time I use it. It is great when it works but this issue is causing me a lot of frustration.

Update: the app is very unstable and has become unusable. I have to reboot my watch and phone every time I use it. I don’t know if this is an iPhone/watch issue or an issue with the app. And it won’t reliably connect to my peloton anymore. Sometimes it drops in and out; sometimes it takes a while to connect and sometimes it won’t connect at all. Again, it is great when it works because it saves me having to wear a heart chest monitor or otherwise seeking a work around for peloton. But, it has not been reliable and when it takes me 5 minutes or so to start the app and get it working it throws off my workout routine.

Please get this app stable! It is so good when it works.
Scottwy,
This saves time & money and removes hassle.
My stupid cardiologist wants me to track HR while exercising. Okay great. I have peloton bike (not + version) but only 2 years old. I HATE wearing a chest strap to track HR. The chest strap HRM that came with the bike was never a great solution anyway - often it just would not connect. I even tried another Peloton branded chest HRM and that failed to connect just as often. I tried a HRM (~$50) that is worn on forearm and it worked for a few months then died. And don’t forget how dumb I felt wearing a forearm HRM and having it sit right next to my seemingly ineffectual Apple Watch. I hated the fact that the Apple Watch is a great HRM but was unable to work with the bike, and therefore forced me into another piece of hardware.

So I stumbled onto this app Thru a review on a random blog. (‘Champaign and coffee stains’). They detailed a process and usage that was simple and effective.

It’s a great app. I would gladly pay $$ to put the apple watch to good use and not have to wear an annoying HRM.

A superior and free way to connect your Apple Watch to Peloton
One of the few frustrations of the Peloton platform is its inability to use your Apple Watch as a heart rate monitor. I’m not going to get into a discussion of whether Apple or Peloton is to blame for this, just note that it is a frustration looking for a solution. Here is your solution.

HeartCast runs on your iPhone and Apple Watch simultaneously, taking your pulse from your watch, broadcasting it to your phone, which then rebroadcasts it in a way that Peloton recognizes as a true heart rate monitor. Genius. And guess what — the app is free.

I tried to use another similar app, which is quite popular, and uses the “freemium” model. That is to say, the app forces you to watch a long commercial unless you upgrade it for a fee. I could never get it to work. From what I can tell, the length of the commercial may have caused the bike to disconnect from the Peloton before it could even get started. There are many posts online as to how to get around the problems with this other app. I suppose I could have paid to upgrade it and see if that solved my problems. But can you imagine the frustration if I had paid for the app and it still didn’t work. So instead I downloaded HeartCast. For free. And I never looked back. In fact, I’ve been so pleased that I made a voluntary donation to the developer.

Save yourself some grief and check it out. You won’t be disappointed.
Jlbeau,
Buggy.. but not connecting to Peloton
First let me say I love this app… It saved me at least $600 from buying a Bike +... I was mainly concerned about connecting my Apple Watch to the Peli...It does that just fine… What I have found is I have issues sometimes just connecting the watch to the app… I have had to restart my Watch in order to connect the two together… Occasionally what will happen is I will open HC on the watch, then open the HC app on the phone but as soon as I try to press start on the watch the phone will switch to loading mode.. and once it loads as soon as I raise my wrist on the phone to start, it will divert back to loading on the phone…They will not connect. I have to restart my watch in order to get them to connect/pair again... once they are paired it’s no problem connecting them to the Peloton heart rate monitor in the “ start class modal”...Thoughts?
Will Ginsberg,
Ok, UX isn’t intuitive
First, thanks for creating this app! Awesome to see someone put the time in to develop this workaround.

My experience was that the initial setup for the app isn’t intuitive. Here are the steps I went thru:

1) downloaded app on phone and watch
2) opened app on watch
3) opened app on phone
4) “started” app on watch
5) went to Bluetooth settings on peloton and paired “Heartcast - ” with the bike
6) observed that heartcast intermittently would connect with peloton or not at all
7) unpaired heartcast with peloton
8) started class and in the class start modal attempted to select heartcast as heart rate monitor
9) observed that bike wouldn’t connect anymore with heartcast and that bike was “bricked”
10) had to shut down peloton and restart
11) force quit heartcast on phone and watch
12) repeat steps 2-4
13) instead of (5), went straight to class and did (8)...without pairing heartcast to the bike
14) observed that heartcast worked successfully

Ultimately I was able to get everything working but there’s a flaw in app onboarding that 12-14 are the steps that are intended to be followed instead of 5-6. My recommendation would be to force the user into the correct flow with the peloton bike otherwise it appears as though the app doesn’t work (even if it does).

Hope this helps, thanks for the work making this!
ian.gold,
Oh well. Not useable for me, alas.
I downloaded this and successfully used it once and donated. I contributed a five star review entitled “So far So Good!” That review is below. Alas, I literally got one use out of it before it became so unreliable and buggy as to be unuseable. Oh well. Stopped trying. I see options for trying to figure out what could be wrong but don’t have the time to get a master’s degree in this particular app. I did make sure software and OS’s were all up to date. An app like this has to be 99% reliable or you’re worried about it all the time.

**Original Review**
This is the app you need if you are looking to use your Apple Watch with your Peloton and don’t have the “+” version of the Bike. It is very well designed! I should say that I am a new user but just used it for a 60 minute ride and it worked flawlessly. Ad-free with very modest donation requested. Thank you!
RobinZ_01510,
Awesome app!
This app is the bridge all us Apple users need! Like many people, I’m housebound due to COVID and it’s winter here in the northeast. I want to ride my mountain bike. I’m on a budget and can’t afford a ~$400 smart trainer. What’s a girl to do? Well, I dragged out my old CycleOps dumb trainer, set my bike in it, bought an iPad holder, and Wahoo cadence and speed sensors. I connected up the sensors to the Wahoo app, Strava, and Apple health. Recorded my first ride and realized no heart rate was recorded. Drats! I didn’t want to buy a heart rate monitor since I have one on my wrist (Apple Watch.) Some frustrating research finally brought me to HeartCast. I downloaded the app, synced everything up, and voila! I have a recorded heart rate with my cycle workout this morning. Thank you! Take. My. Money. (Donation made) 💯 A+
Shelbyyyyyyyy,
Helpful customer service
Update: I have encountered two different instances where I get notifications saying it won’t connect. These were probably a month apart. I reached out this time and they helped worked through the issue. It ended up being something that just restarting my watch was able to help.
I would much rather use my watch over a separate heart rate strap of some kind. This will always be my preferred method so I’m thankful to have found an app that works well and has helpful service if an issue arises.

I’ve had it 24 hours. Yesterday I used it for three consecutive peloton workouts without any issue. I was incredibly impressed. Today it won’t connect at all. Tried for hours.
GSJaramillo,
Great Apple Watch - Peloton interface
Works as advertised with no issues. Some things to consider: per instructions from the app, you do need your phone handy to make the Bluetooth connection with the bike. You also have to be a bit patient and wait for the pairing notification on your phone; it takes long enough to make you think it’s not working. Once connected, you can do multiple classes w/o having to re-pair: if doing another ride, ignore the “not connected” tab on the peloton screen & notice if the heart rate # is still displayed on the upper left; if so, you’re good to go & just jump in to your workout. Hope this helps!
tdawgton,
Great support team and works on latest iOS!
The support team for this app is great! I had a few issues initially due to some weird hidden settings on my iPad. After chatting on Twitter chat we were able to resolve the issue. The support team was incredibly patient while I adjusted the knobs on my Apple Watch, iPhone and iPad and we were working on it over two days. Now everything works great on my iPad. Note there’s interference with Apple fitness plus so make sure you’re disconnected on that before you connect to heartcast (and vice versa). I donated $2 just for the great support team (tho free version works fine)
