zelenki86,
Simple but Useful
I gave this 'MorningPages' app a shot, as I wanted to start a daily writing routine. This app fit the bill perfectly. It's not doing anything fancy , but that's alright. I like having the daily word goals of my entries, and how the entries are organized in a calendar view. It's also nice how it tracks your writing streaks. It's a simple feature, but keeps the writer encouraged to keep writing, which is the whole point. So in my case, it's been effective.

My only criticism is the insights section. I decided to pay for the app to get the added insights, but I don't find them particularly useful or accurate. Though I don't reget paying for the app to support the developers, I do not personally gain any value from the added features you get with the paid version.

That said, I do love this app, and plan on continuing my daily writing exercises in 'MorngingPages'.
jynxmecrazie89,
Great idea, disappointing statistics
I love the idea of this app and I will continue to use it, but I do have one major factor that’s keeping me from buying a subscription to premium.
After you write your set amount of words for the day, the app “analyzes” your text and determines the main topics and the overall tone. It will label your writing either negative or positive depending on what it finds. I thought that was the coolest idea! Not only is the writing alone part of the app a great concept, but to have statistics as well?! I was sold! Until... I wrote a few entries and it continued to get my overall text wrong. It seems to pick random words as your main topics that you have written, not actual focuses of your text. It then told me my overall mood was negative because 33% of my text was negative? Umm, correct me if I’m wrong but wouldn’t that make 67% positive therefore the majority of it should be labeled a positive entry???
It also gave me the same 33% multiple times like it’s just choosing a statistic rather than any actual algorithm at work, especially not one that is close to accurate.
I would recommend this app to people, but only the free version as the subscription is so you can continue getting statistics on your writing.
If the creators were able to make this app actually analyze the writing somewhat correctly I would definitely pay for a subscription, but not in the meantime.
Mariamjals,
Brilliant app!
I must say i was a bit skeptical at the beginning as i was insisting on writing on hand on paper, as that is the true ritual of morning pages but when i realized that days went by and then months where i didn’t write anything as i didn’t have my notebook with me, or i dont want to carry multiple notebooks. So i decided to give MP app a try and i have been converted. I am actually now looking forward to write as it made it so accessible and for me privacy was essential so this app has it all. Does typing on keyboard makes it not authentic, i really don’t believe that. I felt the same affect on writing on paper and it helps me keep going. I believe the core of MP is actually doing it and if an app helps me then goal is achieved. Thank you for the amazing features and the analysis of thoughts, also knowing how far to reach my goal. Awesome, awesome app
ehm29,
Lack of Auto save feature is a major issue
As another reviewer mentioned, losing data is a huge problem here. The developer’s response to that reviewer irritated me—there’s no one correct way to journal. So how I should or shouldn’t use the app is irrelevant—if I’m using it in the morning, then have an interruption (family, pets, realizing I’m late and need to speed things up) and have a chance to finish what I started, the content ought to still be there, as it would with a paper journal. Or, frankly, a word document. Disappointed with a basic function that every other writing app I have manages, since anyone knows the most important thing is not to lose your stuff. I’ve lost it too many times, not realizing it wouldn’t auto save, to continue using this app. Not to mention that then the feature I liked, the word count bar, gets wiped, which makes the pleasure of using the app totally discouraging instead of positive. I was trying to use this solely for journaling to keep up a habit, but they’re breaking a basic habit law (make it easy), so I’ll keep searching.
Book7,
I love it and I have written only one note
I usually don’t write reviews, but I wanted to this time.

I think I’ve downloaded like 7 journal apps - just trying to find the right one. I had one from before but it removed the feature that I went back to it for :( (Daily writing inspirations/quotes). You all have it AND security AND it’s neat AND it tracks emotions and all. Usually with journals I don’t add photos or anything, so I liked the fact that this app is majority about the actual WRITING.

The writing goals - the 500 word goal, is a piece of genius, I swear. I’ve never written that much so quick EVER. It pushes me to write what’s on my mind right then and just whatever comes to my mind. It makes me put everything out there, and everything about my day. I love it! Great app developers!
joefilmmaker,
Still doesn't save until you hit the check button and say yes
New version says don't worry about losing what you write because we save it to iCloud. Thanks for trying guys! One step closer. However, nothing is saved until I hit the save command and say yes. Up to then if the app crashes, my phone runs out of battery, or I switch to a memory-hungry app I will lose what I've written. Look at how Notes does it. Not one letter can be lost. Example:
1. Open Notes
2. New note
3. Type a letter - say A
4. Double-click and swipe up on notes to kill it
5. Open Notes
RESULT: Your one-letter note is still there. Apple doing things well.

Old review:
One really big flaw
This would be a good - maybe great - app if they fix one big flaw. For me losing data is a monster pet peeve. So when I wrote several pages I really was unhappy when the app lost them.

How did this happen? Simple: until you hit Save your text seems to be only stored in memory. If you switch to another app that uses a lot of memory iOS may kill this app and your writing will be lost. Apple tells devs to save everything before relinquishing control but it looks like this app doesn't take that advice.

I'll try the app again when I hear they've fixed the problem. AFTER I've verified the fix by double-clicking the home button and swiping up on the app to kill it. If my writing is gone so is the app!
Nerdlert,
Great App For Journaling
The free version of the app is awesome for my daily journaling. I prefer to keep it digital and I really like using the word count to make sure I'm not cheating myself out of an entry. The dark mode format with the off-white text is easy on the eyes and the app is simple but highly effective.

The paid version is really nice. I like seeing the themes I wrote about. $2.99/mo is a little high for all the features you're getting, but I think it's definitely worth it because you get to pay the creators for the awesome and simple app. MorningPages appears to be totally ad free regardless of pro status and that alone makes me want to throw money at them when and if I can.
Sandling creates sandlin,
Fate makes me get this app
As been long tortured by bp and really need relief tonight, I was trying to find a way to note all my thoughts that could provide me some clues about solving those problems in my heart. And after several searches I found this, intuitively I feel this is the very app I need, no other purchasing needed, just friendly features you’ve been always wanted. I learned that this app had some issues days before, but it was solved and looks all good now. To devs, hope you can keep up marking such nice apps and help more people learn about themselves, and their life. My writing may be not so linear and heard to understand. But all I want to say is, be well everyone!
Buzzy1990,
Awesome!
Never being one to get in the habit of journaling, this has been a real breakthrough for me! It is so easy to use and I look forward to using it every morning. This has also aided me throughout the day just to express however I feel. From a mental health standpoint, this to me is therapy. It’s private and allows me to vent and not be ashamed. I find it positively useful to go back and reflect to see how I felt on a certain days.
I recommend this to anyone who wants to be a better version of themselves. Getting to know and understand oneself is truly love.
Thank you to the makers of Morning Pages! You have made me a true believer of journaling!
B Fox,
Deleted my morning pages :(
I have been a dedicated user for months but I think I might have to stop. There is a bug where my morning pages just immediately get deleted after I write them and then it breaks my streak and my writing that’s really important to me is just gone. I’ve pressed the report bug button each time and have never gotten a response. Also there are days where I do the morning pages at night but before midnight and it arbitrarily gets rid of my streak. The streak counter and the word counter are the big sells of using this, if that’s not working properly I should just use my notes app…worse, if my data/pages are gone for good it will have been detrimental to my morning pages process…I really hope they can be retrieved
