NinetendoGeek247,
Why do you hate this game?
If your having trouble saving you need to talk to the old man in lime green, it’s kinda annoying but the system works well with the game and if you leave the tab open you can just drop in and out. The controls aren’t garbage, iPhone and iPads aren’t made for this but that’s all part of the challenge. And you can skip the intro animation by holding down on the screen.
Edit: Ok I still love this game but I can’t hear the volume. The first thing I checked was that my volume was on and it was, but it wasn’t working. The next thing I checked was the settings and on the game it said the volume would be at maximum potential volume. But when I take my Bluetooth headphones and put them on I start hearing that sounds again and I would like to know how to fix this because this, this is very annoying.
Another Edit: It’s working again, I don’t know why it is but I can enjoy this beautiful plat-former the amazing music 😀.
Cr4shMyCar,
Amazingly fun, beautiful Metroidvania action!
New Shantae games have become a bit of a major occurance, and this is no exception. Wayforward’s made an awesome game with Seven Sirens, following in the belly-dancing-hair-whipping-Metroidvania tradition of the Shantae series. The art is beautiful and lush, the music is a perfect balance of chiptune and more modern music, and combat and platforming is fun as heck. I’ve only fought the first boss, but it’s pretty creative and quite difficult. My two main gripes with this game are the controls and the length. The touch controls are fine, but the jump button is very erratic. Sometimes, Shantae does a half-jump and abruptly stops, sometimes she’ll continuously jump if you hold down the button, sometimes she won’t. While I haven’t died from it, some platforming sections have been more annoying. Also, the length is quite short; I get that it’s a first chapter and Wayforward had to have a hell of a game to get out in time for Apple Arcade’s release, but it’s just made me sad we aren’t getting more of it now. Either way, I’m super excited for Chapter 2 and more sweet Shantae action.
Ortadragoon,
Best “MetroidVania” on iOS
This is a very good game. I played the original Shantae on Game Boy Color as a kid. This is my first time coming back to the series and I’m very impressed with what the developers came up with. It feels like a MetroidVania title.

For those unfamiliar with the term MetroidVania is a type of game similar to classic 2D Metroid or Castlevania:SOTN. In those games you are given little instruction on where to go. As you explore the game world you find places you can’t reach and the game expects you to remember these locations for later. As you defeat bosses and find power ups you gain new abilities that allow you to reach previously unreachable areas.

The new Shantae game takes this philosophy and runs with it. It does a good job of pushing you to the next power up more so than Metroid or Castlevania. It doesn’t feel as complicated and the game World is relatively small so I think it’ll appeal to younger gamers or people just getting into the MetroidVania style. It’s a great introduction to this sub genre of the action adventure mold.
Phil P,
Sort of cross platform
The game was pretty fun. I beat my first run in about 6hrs, but I did get help from an online walkthrough a few times to help me figure out where I needed to go next.

One thing that was great about playing this on Apple Arcade was that I could transfer my saves between iPhone, Apple TV, and my Mac. It wasn’t seamless, because you get promoted about which devices save to use, but it worked.

This let me continue where I left off on the phone, and play on my Mac using a PS4 controller. It was SOO much better that way, as there are a lot of controls and buttons, and platform jumping that’s in later levels required the precision of a controller.

Playing on the Mac also let me pause and put the game in the background to come back later. The archaic console save-point system does not work well in a mobile game. If I get a call or need to do something else, let me put my phone to sleep and come back to the game at the same spot the next day, without having to find a room that lets me save.

One thing that was pretty annoying was loading screens. So many loading screens! On the Mac, they seemed to go faster than on the phone. It also had a progress bar in that version, so that helped. But I don’t see why they couldn’t start loading assets in the background so you are not sitting in front of a loading screen for so long.
CodecMoment,
Can’t believe I haven’t played the other games yet
This is my first time playing a Shantae game and I have to say, it far exceeded my expectations. I absolutely love it. The characters and the art are very charming. The music does a magnificent job of conveying the vibe of each area you’re in.

The exploration is fun, and it’s in part because of its responsive controls, which was unexpected since I’m playing this on an iPhone XR. Obviously, it doesn’t control as well as a physical controller, but this is as good as on-screen controls get. My only request would be that they allow you to customize the button layout and sizes of the buttons.

I was bummed when I finished part 1. I wanted it to be longer! Can’t wait to play the rest. I can understand why people wanted Shantae to be in Smash. Maybe I’ll pick up the other Shantae games while I’m waiting!
Marshmellows UwU,
No Game Center account
I was starting up the game and it played an intro cutscene (very cute, by the way) and then, I started to play it. I realized it said I had no Game Center account, but I didn’t care. But within seconds of starting up save slot 1, it said my Game Center account had changed, and I was going to warp to the title screen. But it took an unusually long time, and I realized I wasn’t going anywhere. After millions of swiping away and starting the game up, it finally realized I had a Game Center account, let me in, and I played shantae. It was fun, up until it CRASHED and the catastrophe started happening AGAIN! WHAT THE HECK?!? well, it’s pretty fun, so if this “bug” gets fixed, I will feel a lot better. Thank you for reading, good luck making more shantae games!
ReedHat,
The first boss is terrible
The beginning of the game is fine, and then you get to the first boss, an unpredictable mess of rng. The gimmick of the boss is you have to press one of two buttons to move her towards 1 of 3 light positions. The problem comes in when the light is random and doesn’t linger for more than three seconds and the platform you have to move is pretty slow. The boss’s attacks don’t really help either, especially since they target you like they are heat seeking. The worst offender is when she throws down a huge wall of those spikes from bowsers castle when you are on the button, which you can’t leave because the light you need to put the boss in to damage her is going to disappear, so you have to tank the damage. What makes all this worse is that on my first try on the boss, she got stuck, and the game is programmed not to spawn the light on her. So you just have to die. Overall a mess of the boss.
KrazyKirbyKid,
Not great. But I expected as much.
Shantae games have never been great. They’re just decent. And though the production in this version is very nice , the controls are bad. The hair attack mechanic is stiff and the iPhone controls make it harder that never to move and attack. This game was designed for another platform. Some UI elements are obscured and the menu UI is confusing (especially when assigning cards). The choice to go with metroid level design is a popular one. But like most, the attention to detail, guidance, hints, exploration, and secrets in this game are very lacking. Gotta do more than just stitch rooms together and make me run through them to collect knickknacks. For a game series that’s essentially metroid for babies (no shame. Babies have to start somewhere) I would have liked for all the rough edges to be smoothed out by now. How many times has this formula been reused?
Mcintough,
Really Amazing!
Super fun game! I loved exploring all the crazy rooms and I never knew what powers I would get next. It really kept getting better and better with all the powers I was unlocking, and by the final boss I was super OP! This game has it all, good story, fun gameplay, plenty of fully animated cutscenes, and a ton to do! I especially loved the Xbox controller support. I played the entire thing with a controller with absolutely no hiccups. Absolutely astonishing how good this game managed to be on IOS no less!!
TomboyTimon,
Half-Genie, Mixed-Bag
This is my first time playing a Shantae game and I'm surprised how mediocre it is despite being the latest instsllment in a long running series.

The controls take getting used to, and they remain flawed. The number of ways to get stuck early on are simply too many. The character designs are polished but juvenile. 9/10 of the ladies in this game have very simmilar hourglass physiques whereas the boys throughout the game have widely varied bodies. The amount of backtracking is overbearing. The game mechanics take a lot to wrap your head around. The level design is do repetetive it can be more like a bunch of annoying mazes than fun dungeons.

There's more to be said, but do give it a try, yourself. I'm not sold on Shantae.
