tealsummernights,
Easily my favorite WaniKani app, with a few reservations
This is a fantastic WaniKani review app, and definitely the best one I’ve used on iOS. It looks great and works very well. There are a few small things that bother me, but nothing that deal breaking. I covered all my suggestions in an email sent to the dev, but in short: - Info automatically popping up upon wrong answer - Ability to mark correct answers as incorrect - A fix for audio sometimes restarting mid-play Even without these additions and fixes, though, I still think this is a great app and well worth using!

Edit: The faults of this app are starting to get really annoying over time, and there hasn’t been any response from the dev from what I can see. I’m not even sure if this is being developed anymore. Unfortunately, this is still the best WaniKani app on iOS. It’s so close to being great that it’s frustrating.

Edit 2: There have been a handful of updates now. They sadly have not addressed any of the improvements I’ve been hoping for, but it shows that the app is still being worked on, so I’ve upped the rating to 4 stars.
Jupiter-J,
Wonderful App but Font changes on iOS 16 harder to use.
Font has changed on application from iOS 15 to iOS 16 and it low key is making it uncomfortable to use compared with previous font styling. Any chance that we can make fonts configurable? I love using this app but since the font change it has become harder to use and enjoy.
Jason Toups,
Better than Tsurukame
I have used Tsurukame for a while, but I was annoyed that I couldn’t add notes, edit meanings (and see my edits), etc.

Luckily, this app came along! I downloaded in Jan 2021 and I love it. It looks and feels a lot like the WaniKani website, which is nice. It has clear UI for adding notes to mnemonics and synonyms. It also has an easy navigation to drill backwards from a vocab word to the kanji and then it’s radicals. Lastly, if you get a meaning wrong and want to review it, it shows you the meaning, but not the pronunciation (unless you click over to that), and vice-versa.

The app is new, and there are a few improvements I’d like to see:
1. I sometimes have an issue when I add mnemonic notes. My keyboard slides up from the bottom but hides the note-taking area and the save button. So I have to type RETURN over and over until those buttons come into view.
2. It would be nice for the buttons, currently at the bottom, to be moved up higher. This includes the buttons for next card, review card, and re-do card. The “next” button is in the very far bottom right corner, and it’s kind of hard to hit. It hurts my hand.

These are both minor issues and don’t really impede my use, but it would be nice to see them improved in future versions. Great app so far!

Handy mobile app for studying with WaniKani
The developer has continued to impress me with their dedication to improvement. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an app change so much, and they have done so at an impressive pace. My issues, which were minor to begin with, have all been resolved, and the app runs great! One of the new features I especially dig is the orange level up indicator. I’m excited to see how it continues to evolve in the future. The developer probably has more interesting ideas than this, but some other little things which could be nice is being able to minimize the panels on the main screen (radicals, kanji, review forecast, and item summary) and see a numerical total of how many reviews will come up on each day of the forecast (like you can on the website).
Ruben50,
Loving it!
So far I’m loving this app. Super simple to use so long as you go into the Wanikani site to familiarize yourself with the process. I just have one thing for you to look at in the kanji reading input. I spelled out juu for the ten kanji using kana (じゆう) and it was marked incorrect. Not sure if it’s because the “ were added separately from the し on the keyboard on my phone. The website allows you to choose じ directly. Thanks for the great app. I took a screenshot just in case you need it.

Favorite wanikani app but I NEED HELP
This has been my go to app for wanikani for the last two years. I think it’s the best one out there, easily.
I’m hoping a developer sees this review. I’m having issues using the app at the moment. I have signed out and back in, switched from automatically getting the api token to providing it myself manually, and even deleting the whole app and redownloading it. Nothing I do fixes the issue though.

Every time I do a lesson it scores me at 0% regardless what I actually scored and then does not adjust the review totals. Every time I try it just give me the same 15 recycled reviews.

If someone or a developer knows what the issue is I’d love some help. Thanks!

I love the app and I want to keep using it PLEASE HELP! 🙏
Xdflames,
Best Wanikani iOS app
Really enjoyed switching to this. However, I would like to have the additional study feature added to this app. Wanikani recently added a way to review mistakes and recent items without affecting the SRS level. This would be very useful for going back and seeing what I missed.

Main reason for switching to this app are Kanji stroke order, and more visually appealing UI.

Great app but randomly decides to shutdown
I used Jakeipuu for a year or so in 2019 and then just one day it started to just reload for three days straight where I could even use it. I recently used it yesterday and the day before after almost 2 years of not being to use it. Now it’s signed me out and it keeps saying unable to log in after trying numerous times! It’s a great app which is why it’s so frustrating how randomly it just shut down!
Nadiaku,
SRS timing may need adjustment
I want to love this app. It looks great, has many excellent features (“undo” button for entry typos etc), but after using it for about 20 hours of study, I got worried the SRS timing may be off. It repeated the same lesson items five times in a day and levelled those items up from apprentice to guru all in that same day. It may be great for flying through the levels but I don’t feel like I would retain things if burned on this app...such a shame because it’s a beautiful interface with solid extra features and I’d love to see it work on Wanikani’s robust SRS algorithm.
Lingoholic,
Keyboard glitch
Beautiful app but adding notes makes a keyboard that won’t then “go away.” So, I added a note to one kanji while learning a new set and now it won’t let me take the quiz because I can’t get the keyboard out of the way. You can back out and go back in, but that feels slightly disruptive of the process.
