Onkyo Controller is the official Onkyo remote control application that allows users to conveniently operate compatible Onkyo network products from their iPhone/iPod touch/iPad.
The intuitive, user-friendly interface makes it easy to get more from your AV home entertainment experience.
Main functions that can be operated through this application.
(1) Play music in each room or every room
- Lets you play music from music streaming services such as Pandora, Spotify, DEEZER and TIDAL, your music library on your smart device, or your NAS drive on compatible products.
- You can play your music via radio, Bluetooth and USB.
(2) Remote control functions
- You can operate general control functions (play/stop, control the volume, select the input source, etc.) from your smartphone.
(3) Operation of connected product（home theater product such as AV amplifier）
- Lets you control a Blu-Ray Disc player or TV that is connected to an AV amplifier or home theater product via HDMI.
(4) Dirac Live-enabled products measure automatic sound field correction. In addition, filters can be edited.
(5) Audio/Video formats of input and output can also be checked.
*By setting the “Network Standby” menu item in the unit’s initial settings to ON, you can use this application to turn on the power of the unit.

Where is the volume control?
Uh, the most important reason for this app and I can’t find it. Just lay out the app like the remote. How hard can this be? People know how to use a remote. Why make the app rocket science? It should have quick access to the functions of the remote and a menu that matches the settings on the unit. Some developer has forgotten the first rules of user interface design. What does the user want, not what looks snazzy.
Edited: finally found out you have to be on the selected input to have the volume control show up. At least I know how to make it work for me, but everything I said above still stands. I gave you back one additional star because the app can (eventually) do what you want.

Vastly improved UI and other necessary features
The app feels much more modern and intuitive to use as of the 3.0 update in October, 2022. They finally added a volume knob, sleep timer and concise Interface of audio info within the app while remaining responsive and easy to understand. In addition, there’s some quality of life options such as the ability to add a custom photo of different backgrounds to represent your receiver within the app; nice touch. Nothing is slow and unresponsive like the how the volume and option menu used to be, and overall everything looks seamlessly designed and upgraded for the modern digital age of today. Do not become complacent, Onkyo. This app is excellent now, but it will need to be continuously updated to accommodate new receivers and features.

Still learning the nuances of the system.
I’ve had issues with this app detecting my two receivers from my iOS devices. I think I made the mistake of putting the receivers on the 5G WIFI instead of 2.4G. With that change things are working better. For a free app the feature set is fine for my devices - Pandora or media streaming from a Synology NAS media server. One other irritation with Onkyo receivers is that they shouldn’t offer network updates as an option if they are only supported over Ethernet and not WIFI, which is how I have them networked. I have an Ethernet adapter that has helped me several times with recovering from this issue. Again, once I have my ducks lined up - it is a decent system. Zone 2 is my happy place.

A Frustrating App
Frustrating. I dread opening this app. I wish my TX-RZ830 allowed me to dump this trash and use the newer remote app.
Slow. Selection of features takes 10-15 seconds per selection. Don’t select anything more than once or you’ll be watching a replay of the last 15seconds of your life through the eyes of a spasmatic tweaker.
Unreliable. Every 4th or 5th login requires reset of my network and power cycle of the receiver to allow recognition of the app and the receiver. The receiver can connect independently to streaming channels, but does not allow connection through the app when the issue occurs.
Disappointing. When I coughed up the cash for this receiver I thought I was getting the latest greatest technology for linking a multi-room stereo receiver to streaming services. Boy was I wrong. This is early 2010’s tech at best. Am I just supposed to be enamored by the fact that my stereo and phone can talk, while I struggle to keep my excitement contained? Come on.
I think many issues could be resolved by bringing in compatibility of the TX-RZ830 with the “3” app.
I hope this happens soon!
In the meantime, embrace the pain. It will make you a stronger person, and you too may develop a passion for writing wordy reviews of obscure electronic devices on the internets that no one will read.

Tired of Onkyo app for iPhone.
It used to work correctly when I have made initial setup a year ago. It worked well about 6 months. Then it stopped finding my TX-NR696. I tried everything from wifi router changes to do initial setup again and again then finding app and device updates. I also have deleted / downloaded app and setup device many many times. I always got same result: After a week or so working properly app stopped finding my Onkyo again. Really tired doing a lot of stuff and wasting much time every time I turn it on and try to use my system trough app and guessing what went wrong this time.
Better to use remote control to avoid loosing time -but I feel like I’m wasting TX-NR696 by not using all nice functionalities it comes with.

Searching...Searching...Searching...
This app worked really good for about 9 mo starting mid 2018. When I used it, it always found my TX-RZ620 within a few seconds. Starting a few months ago, it now only finds the receiver about 5% of the time. I even have my router set up to give the receiver the same IP address each time, and I search using that specific address using this app, and it still will not find out. Onkyo’s response is to power cycle the receiver and then power cycle the router. Seriously? What’s the point of having a remote app if you have to walk around the house pulling power cords in and out? I’m really tired of watching the spinning wheel and seeing “Searching” whenever I use this app. The RZ-620 is my second Onkyo receiver. I have found both to be good to very good A/V receivers but with dismal performance when it comes to networking. C’mon Onkyo, you can do so much better!!!

Needs Work
This app needs a ton of work.
Issue 1 need to stop the side rocker volume buttons from turning Zone volume up and down when in Zone 2!
Issue 2 - In Audio Adjust menu - Add all the speaker volume adjustments instead of only sub woofer and center speaker. Why on earth you only added those two and not the rest is stupid! I hate having to go into the settings and listening to the super loud tones just to adjust surround speaker volumes!
Issue 3 - Allow easier device access for zone two. Meaning if I want to use my phone to listen to music in zone I don’t want to have to put my phone in AirPlay mode the select in the app my phone then go back to AirPlay menu on phone and select the Onkyo receiver! Then fix volume adjustment!
Issue 4 - To change audio modes have a drop down menu for each one (Movie, Music, Game, THX, add one for Dolby)! This would make sound adjustments so much more easier and seem less.
Issue 5 - Get rid of music optimizer switch, it’s completely useless and does nothing!
Issue 6 - Remote section is useless make it have the same buttons as the actual remote!!
There are a few more but this app has amazing potential as replacement for real remote, but the lack of development is completely abysmal!

Works for what I need
Several reviewers either based their comments off an older version or couldn’t figure out how to use it. As soon as I got on the same network as my receiver (NR656) I saw it and connected. I was able to enable and disable each zone independently, set the input, and control volume to each. That’s really all I want to do so haven’t explored further. They did try to make the interface modern and it complicated things a bit, I would have preferred simple and clean, but that’s the norm these days... all the functions I need are there and work.

WORST! So much easier to just walk to the receiver.
Let’s think for a moment about what you want to do with a remote app and a receiver with two zones. Change the volume quickly and easily comes to mind. So bad. Just so bad. Why do I need to click so many times? First I have to figure out which of the indecipherable little icons takes me to the place where I can choose the zone. Then I have to select a zone, and then click to get out to the place where see what is playing, then, FINALLY, I can change the volume. God forbid if I then need to turn down the other zone.
Seriously, how odd would be to just have one screen with the volume controls for both zones or, a master volume control?
I would give this app negative stars but that doesn’t seem to be an option.

Works For Me
I already have a universal remote that does what I need and for basic functions I use Alexa... but when it came to listening to my music library — which is on a usb hard drive — it took way too long to get to where I needed. This app eliminated any and all difficulty. The app recognized my receiver immediately, and within a few button presses I’m listening to the song I want. What used to take 3-4 minutes (sometimes longer as I have around 1000 different artists on my HD, some are full discographies) now takes about 30 seconds.
