Description

Join the hundreds of thousands of runners who have used Run 5k to go from a couch potato to a 5k (3.1 miles) runner. This app is great for beginner runners who have never run before or former runners who want to start up again.

The Run 5k app has been featured on CNN.com, Boston.com’s lifestyle-health section, and in Health Magazine. Get into shape using our 8-week beginner training plan, complete with an animated warmup and cooldown stretching program. This app has voice cues that guide you even when your screen is locked. The app tells you when to run and walk and gives audio cues for distance and pace when you use GPS. You can use this app outside, on a track, or in the gym.

FEATURES
• Apple Watch app—you can leave your phone at home while you work out with our Watch app, or continue to use our Watch app together with the iPhone app.
• Speaks pace, distance, intervals, and halfway point.
• Optionally uses GPS for pace and distance. (You can also use this app on a treadmill or indoor track without GPS.)
• Animated warmup and cooldown stretching programs with timer and voice cues.
• Tap out your heart rate on the heart icon.
• Supports Bluetooth heart rate monitors.
• Integrates with the Health app. Set your weight in the Health app to calculate Calories burned, and to save your Active Calories for each workout.

ABOUT the WORKOUTS
• 8-week training program perfect for beginners or former runners.
• Each workout is about 30 minutes long.
• Interval training alternates between jogging and walking.
• Workout intervals gradually become more challenging.
• 5-minute warmup and 5-minute cooldown, which are skippable.
• Speaks each jog and walk interval, halfway mark, and 1-minute-left mark.
• Optionally speaks pace and distance information every 1/2 mile or 1/2 km.
• Automatically checks off each completed workout and records your date, pace and distance.

AUDIO CUES and NOTIFICATIONS
If you’re not getting Notifications in the background, open the Settings app, select Notifications, then scroll down to find Run 5k in the list. Tap on Run 5k and turn on Notification Center, choose an alert style, and turn everything else on (Sound, Badge App Icon, Lock Screen). Check your volume and make sure your ringer switch is not set to silent/vibrate.

HEALTH
This app can be integrated with the Health app. Your weight set in the Health app can be used to calculate Calories burned during a workout, and the total Active Calories burned can be saved to Health app after each workout. Sharing this information with the Health app is optional.

GPS and LOCATION
To show distance and pace information, Run 10k can use GPS location tracking during a workout. For best results, use this app outside where you can see open sky. Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

hustycleaner,
I can actually RUN!
This app is awesome! I love the simplicity and functionality of this app. It started me off at a pace that pushed me, but was doable. The increased run times each week are small enough to help me see success with each workout! Two weeks ago I never envisioned I could run for 3 minutes...here I am at week 3 and I did it!!!

I gave this app a 4 star rating because most workouts have prompts that are not working (in weeks 1 & 2: I will update my review as I progress). Sometimes I run longer than planned because the prompt did not tell me to walk or vice versa. It’s not to big of a deal, but if you really are relying on those prompts and you think you have run or walked to long then this might be a pain, or Interruptive when your in the zone.
Vypergrrrl,
Very Basic, Buggy with Apple Watch
I’m on week 6 and I’m now running more than 20 minutes straight, which is a first for me. I was able to complete each workout and didn’t have to repeat any so far, so I feel like the progression is good. It’s good as far as the program and the stopwatch go, but otherwise it’s very basic and has some bugs. I use it on my Apple Watch and it regularly fails to announce the run/walk intervals when they start, so I have to keep checking my watch while I run which is annoying. The app on my phone does not store any of the data from my runs (distance, pace, HR, etc) so you can’t compare those to previous runs. So the only real improvements you can see are your increased times.

If the app stored your run data and the Apple Watch bug was fixed I would give it 5 stars. Kid if frustrating that people have been complaining about the watch bug in the reviews for a long time and it’s still an issue.
Maxtro210,
Long Time User, First Time Problem
I’ve used this app for several years and have been very happy with it, however recently a problem has developed that has me confused. It seems that this app tricks my phone into thinking the battery is dead. I’ll start my run with 86% battery, fire up my music, launch the app and get going. Not every time, but at least half the time, about 10-20 minutes in, my phone will just turn off. When I try to do a manual restart I get the charger and lightning bolt icon signaling that the battery needs to be charged. I’m now left with finishing my run without run/walk queues and music. When I get home, I plug my phone in to charge and it immediately powers up to show around 72% battery. I’m not sure if anyone else has had this issue but this is the only app that causes my phone to do this. Other than this issue, I have no complaints about this app and hope I’ll be able to continue using it.
SAtrumpet,
Great app
Great app for free. I miss some of the old features. When I first started this app many years ago I was able to easily shadow progress on social media. The app also tracked your gps path and had a map shown as part of your results. Both of these features are not present anymore.

Also on last nights run it no longer reminded me when I was halfway. I always enjoyed this because I know when to turn back around and end up back home at the end of the work out.

But overall if you struggle with endurance running, this is the app to use as long as you stay consistent.
WV_Mik,
I used to love it
I have recommended this app to many people and find myself using it over and over when I have fallen off the exercise ‘wagon’.
However...
My current dilemma: it has stopped tracking my average pace and distance consistently. Some runs it will, some it won’t. I use the app the same way every time so I don’t understand what’s wrong. Same when I use the app on my Apple Watch. No distance, no pace, no heart rate reading.
Also, I’ve had runs where it resets itself...like, I start my 3 minute run and after what feels like FOREVER, I glance at my phone and see that it has gone back to the warmup. Weird. And frustrating.
ladevotchka,
Love this app
This app is wonderful. I've been using it for years and always come back to it when I need to restart my running routines after injuries, etc. or need a well structured interval practice. My only wish list item for the app would be to have a way to isolate the running pace during the running intervals. Right now it just gives an overall pace average over the whole session and the walking breaks can prevent us from getting a good sense of our running speeds. Thanks!!
Chitown Marathoner,
From 5k to marathoner
I started running when I saw my backside in a storefront window. I did a double...no wait...triple take and wondered what happened on the flip side. I purchased the app (first app purchased), and because I spent money, was going to see the entire program through. I got shin splints and was in pain. About week 6, things started feeling better. I completed the program and went onto run 2 marathons. Couldn’t have asked for a better way to start my running career!
UkSr,
Seriously changed my life
I bought my first iPhone in 2010. This was a recommended app. I downloaded it and started using it on August 2nd 2010. It was a 9 week program and it took me 11 weeks to complete as I couldn’t get through a couple of the weeks completely at that time. Today (2019) I am in training for my 3rd half Ironman (September) and my 25th full marathon (November). Thank you. I picked the right app at the right time in my life for serious change.
Roshan Church,
Great!
I’ve been running on and off for years, and this app is always great at helping me get back on track and work up my strength again.

Recently got an Apple Watch and was thrilled that this app worked well with it out of the box, even when I leave my phone behind at home.

Great stuff! Keep it up, Felt Tip! I appreciate you!
urbanslaughter,
USED to love this app…
This was a great app when I first got it, and there were frequent updates. Unfortunately, the watch app ruins it. It just doest work when I use it with my Apple watch. The developer knows about this problem, but hadn't done anything to fix it. I've done everything they tell you to do to fix it, but it doesn't get any better. When you use the watch app (even with mirroring turned off) you don't get any notification telling you to walk or run. I've had this app for years, but now have to buy another app to do the same thing.
