"I've tried 2-3 other apps. I've kept paper logs. Nothing has been easier to use than this app. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't enter my warm up sets...its because you don't need to! You enter your work set weight and it tells you exactly what to load on the warmup-ups..."

D2sutton,
Great App
You really must read the book...soak on it. Figure out your starting weights and then get going. I did weight training in my 20's and I wish I would have had this book. Now I am mid 50's and everything is a struggle...workout recovery, injury recovery, etc. However, if you take it slow, take time to recover, stretch each workout day, reread the book occasionally, then you can set yourself up for a lifetime of greater strength and fitness. This app goes a long way toward helping with the goal. It is easy to use. Look through everything before you start and backup to the cloud weekly.

Update: still a great app for starting out. It does all the thinking...warm up weights and reps, timer, etc. The big drawback is when you are ready to move beyond the novice SS routine, the app is not capable. You cannot increase reps beyond 5 nor sets beyond 3. So if you move to Texas method or H-L-M, then you must find another app. I have found nothing like this one where I set my work set weight and the app fills in warmup, timer, etc. So yes it is a great app, but you will either quit or move beyond novice which means finding another adequate, but less than desirable, app.
O-ist,
Great training log (1 year of use)
This is my favorite training log (especially since I’m doing starting strength and this is tailored to the program). The app automatically alternates workouts each time you login, increases the weight on a lift for the next workout, calculates the plates you add to the bar, etc. It makes it really easy to track all the reps and weights you lift so there’s really no excuse not to have a detailed training history. You can even type in quick notes for a lift. The other feature I really like is that it automatically generates graphs showing the lifts you’ve done, the date you did them, whether you were successful, and your body weight.
This app takes your mind of the logistics off logging your work and lets you focus on more important things like getting those calories in and hitting those PRs. Happy Training!
Useless app hunter,
Excellent app
The timers and counters are very useful. A written log is always better but in this modern age our mobile devices have become part of our daily life even for logging data and information. I hate to say it but if this is where our future is heading then we to take these things more seriously and continue to push for improvements in these apps. I love that it accurately calculates your warm up reps for you. Still would be nice to be able to customize reps and sets for intermediate exercises and add exercises to the workout like barbell rows. Maybe even log personal info about rest, recovery, diet, or just how I’m feeling that day (basically eliminating the written log). The StrongLifts 5x5 app does do some of these things and is much more intuitive, but it does not calculate warm ups as accurately as this app. Also having digital access to key pages from the book and video Gifs of the Exercises is incredibly helpful. Keep it up starting strength, always room for improvement but this app is on the money. Thanks.
Bombur the Wise,
Please fix the clock and fix unit conversion!
I recently moved from StrongLifts 5x5 to Starting Strength and I must say this app is great. However, the timer is not working for me on my iPhone X. Either the start button is missing or it resets to 0 and I can’t change it or start it. It’s just a mess. This is one of the reasons I purchased the app to save me opening the stopwatch it on my phone.

Also, I travel around the world a lot. When switching between pounds and kilograms in different gyms it would be really REALLY useful if I can easily switch the units and it converts the units in the history and my current workout. Instead it resets my workout data, but leaves the previous number in lbs and uses it for Kg. Why not just convert what’s there? In fact this alone nearly made me give this app three stars since I have to manually convert it all myself and correct it in the app.

I am curious how fast the developers will respond to this, if they see it, since I’ve had a very good experience with another certain app.
NVillar,
Excellent content, app needs work
I love Starting Strength but this review is for the app itself. I have an iPhone 8 Plus. I use this app every time I go to the gym. I’ve noticed that the timer is finicky and will jump around on you on the screen. The timer also stops sometimes when you switch to the music app momentarily to find your pump up jam to hit those PRs for sets of fahves. When altering your weight in either the past workouts or at the end of the workout there is no enter button or way to collapse the keyboard so it’s just there. In my case I cannot change the warm up set weight in the settings area, only during the actual workout. It sometimes doesn’t keep track of when I have the PC instead of the DL. Unless I’m missing it, I’d like to see intermediate programs added in as opposed to just LP. Maybe add another video reference? Barbell Logic’s videos are short and sweet and provide audio. I will continue to use the app and recommend it since it is a no-brained when calculating warmups and rest times.
itchybrains,
Just what I needed
I truly appreciate this intuitive and useful app as a companion to the Starting Strength book and program. It does all the math for me with a minimum of setup prior to workout, and that’s only if I NEED to adjust something. I’m 3 weeks in and hitting my actual work weight and the app just keeps up with everything and the built in timer that sounds through my headphones in tandem with the music I choose to play through my music app is icing on the cake. My workouts have excellent structure with this app as compared to the loose timing and “just feel it” resistance I was casually employing prior to downloading it. It feels like science now, no time wasted! 5 stars from me and I’ll share it with anyone who’ll listen. Thanks for making something so useful and easy to use.
AttyJPo,
Great App. Would like more options.
This app is great if you are doing a pure Starting Strength routine. The ability to change progressive weight increases and modifying routines could use a bit of work to make it more user friendly.

Going forward, I would love to see this app incorporate more customization, including the ability to include additional warmup sets and add in additional exercises for each workout. This seems to be the next evolution in this app as many users will segue into Practical Programming or similar intermediate programming after several months of basic Starting Strength workouts. It would be great to keep track of exercises well into the future and to develop custom workouts into the program after graduating from Starting Strength.

I would give this program 6 stars if it included Texas Cafe Classics.
Mr. Toad's Apprentice,
Good, but could be better
A very good app, but one that could be better, and one the should be, given its sticker price. The app hasn’t been updated in many months, which might not bode ill, but certainly doesn’t bode well, either. A few things I’d like to see added: 1. Better integration of the chin up. 2. A timer for the entire workout. 3. A more intelligent AI for determining weights for warmup sets or the ability to enter custom weights for accuracy’s sake. (Why a warmup set of 90 lbs, let’s say, for the squat, when 92 lbs is close enough and more quickly set up? Time isn’t everything, but why waste it? I don’t need the app to tell me this, of course, but I do need the app to let me record the weights I actually used.) I’m sure other improvements could be made. Let me repeat: this is a very good app. But like muscles, it won’t improve by staying still.
jrodenbiker,
Great for 40-somethings too
This app makes it so easy to follow the program in the weight room. I’m 43 and haven’t seriously worked out in 7-8 years. Now I’ve followed the program (including sleep and nutrition) and the results are phenomenal, basically exactly what Rich says will happen to a guy who has 30%+ body fat. My weight is holding steady. My body fat is dropping while my muscle is increasing at an almost unbelievable rate. The stuff outside the weight room is still on me. Getting enough calories and protein is hard and my fam is concerned about the amount of whole milk I’m drinking. Getting 7-8+ hrs sleep every night is a lifestyle change. But this app makes everything else easy.
ptaylor7800,
Great for tracking linear progression!!
I love this app! It has info from the book with video demonstrations that make it next to impossible to misunderstand the combination of the movements and program. With that said, I do wish there was a little more freedom with program structure. When reaching the end of LP it may be necessary for some to change certain things, such as 5 sets of 3 on press instead of 3 sets of 5. Also, 2 sets of 3 instead of 1 set of 5 on deadlift. However, I realize that such changes would earn a “not doing the program” stamp from the SSCs, and if a person has gotten that far in their training they should have a composition notebook to log all of this anyway, so maybe my suggestion would not apply. All in all, if a person wants to start LP, this app is very handy. Great work Mick!
