neobeguine,
Good for beginners or former athletes looking to get back in shape
The stability issues other reviews have mentioned seem to have been fixed. This is a good couch to 5 k program with a gradual ramp up and a fun story that keeps you coming back. There is a lot of unstructured “free form run” time (you decide how much to run or walk)which allows it to be a good program for all levels of starting fitness, but also structured drills that guide you to keep improving each week. I’m halfway through and gotten to the point where I’m jogging the whole time for the (5-15 minute) free form runs, my blood pressure is down 20 points, and my pants are getting loose. I used to HATE running but this makes it fun!
aniimo13,
Good app, has some problems
This app is exactly what I needed to get me running again. The story isn’t /really/ a story as it is with the regular zombies, run app, but it’s enough to keep me engaged and make me want to keep going. It does crash semi regularly though, especially with the run tracker set to “constant” and there’s no way to start back up where you left off after that, so just keep that in mind.

Update:
It has crashed 4 out of the last 5 times I’ve used it. I think I’m beginning to figure out what makes it crash but it’s suuuuuuuper irritating. If you’re like me and you’re doing this in part because you like getting the little “well done!” notices and stamps at the end DO NOT USE THIS APP; it’s causing me a lot of stress and making me want to give up entirely. For less of a chance of it crashing turn on step tracking, keep your screen on, and do Not exit the app at any time during the workout. That includes pulling down the shortcuts screen. It might still crash even then, but it will more likely to not. Good luck.
BabyCharmander,
Would be good... if it worked.
I did the intro run and everything ran smoothly. I’m not really into zombie stories but I was enjoying the characters, voice acting, etc. Then I started the Week 1 Day 1 run, and it worked great... up until the very end. Just as I was finishing the run, my entire phone restarted. No data was saved. I was frustrated, but I’d finished the run, so I went on to the next day’s run a few days later. Started the initial walk, and then wondered why the scientist was silent when it had certainly been 10 minutes. Checked my phone to find the app had crashed. I restarted the app and started the run again, but there was no way to skip forward past the parts I’d already completed (a feature in the last C25K app I was using). On top of that, it wouldn’t even finish the intro before the app crashed again.

On top of the crashes, the app is an enormous drain on my battery. The previous C25K app I used did not have that problem.

It’s a good app in theory... but I can’t use an app that crashes like this. If the devs fixed the crash problems, they’d have a great app, and I’d have fun. But until this is fixed, I’m going to have to go back to my other C25K app.
L. Guzman,
A little buggy but I can get over it
I really enjoy the original Zombies, Run app and decided to buy the 5k app to improve my running as it’s pretty poor. I ended up buying the full version so I could do all of the missions, which I probably wouldn’t have done if I knew it was going to become so buggy after the fourth week. The timer doesn’t always work right, so I’m stuck unlocking my phone to force it to the next segment if I wonder how long it’s been. It’s almost like the game times out and doesn’t give you the prompts to run or walk. Once I turn on my phone though, it will “catch up” and give me ALL the prompts at once. It isn’t normally more than an inconvenience since it removes one cycle from my workout, but my runs routinely go 15-20 minutes over the time they should now, which I have to account for so I’m not late for work in the morning.
Cupcake_Power13,
A great app!!!
I've never consistently exercised at all, maybe when I was a little kid, but definitely not in my teenage years. However, yesterday I completed all 8 weeks of this app and it was so much fun! I never knew running could be as enjoyable as it was while doing this training. I didn't think I would be able to finish 8 weeks of any kind of exercising, so being able to do it all was an amazing feeling. I downloaded Zombies, Run! a few years ago and never really used it because I couldn't run much, but now I feel like I am in good enough shape to get more into it. I love exercising now, which I never thought I'd ever say that in my entire life.
Moonwynde,
Great training overall
Nearly finished the 8 weeks and I have to give credit where it’s due. Very well designed program, you’ll certainly improve over the training period if you follow the apps lead and push yourself to improve.

Unfortunately, it does have an occasional tendency to crash during training. Initially I thought it could be because I was tracking with my Fitbit as well as the app (sharing gps), but having switched to a Garmin tracker with built in gps, I’ve still had the app crash. Not a lot, but enough to be frustrated by it. The lack of a auto save so that you can restart where you left off in case of a crash is disappointing.

Overall, if you want to get in shape, this is a great utility.
Rmeeks4,
Great app for training!
I recently got this app because I have Zombies, Run!, and I had no time to exercise due to being in college, but now I’m starting back running and this app is the best to help you get faster when running. I’m starting to notice that I’m getting a faster pace from it. The only part that is sad is that when I’m jogging or sprinting from imagining zombies, it is not tracking how many miles I have gone. I also wish that there is an Apple Watch feature, because I have to track how many miles I have gone from looking at my workout app on the watch. But overall I give this app a 4.5 star rating.
TravelFr,
Prepping to my first half marathon at 52 yo
I have the whole package of ZR apps now. This January I suddenly even to myself decided to run half marathon this fall. At the age of 52. Yep. First race ever. And I hated running since school bit started appreciating run “me time”, zen state, and how I am proving to myself that I can do this too. Now I am halfway through 5K, next will be 10K, 10K+, and then Half Marathon Zombies Run prep app. Fun way to get ready! Will see in September, how well the program is designed from a running training standpoint ;) I am now even thinking to get myself a ZR t-shirt for the run, just as a thank you for helping me to get ready and achieve this fit!
pxkkjkjrk,
Okay app overall.
I loved this app! I’ve never been a runner. The only time I’ve ever run was in P.E. class in school! I’m 29 now and decided during quarantine to try to be more active. I was supposed to start week 4 today, however I was disappointed when the app asked me to upgrade/purchase a subscription to complete the rest. I’m not looking to pay for a subscription at the moment and was led to believe this app was completely free. I wish I would’ve known they’d ask you to purchase in the middle of the 8 week program. At least, give people 4 weeks then ask us to subscribe and put a clear warning in the first tutorial off the app!
Overall, I do thank you for helping me get to where I am at this point.
fleshdunce,
Great app for aspiring runners or anyone looking to get more active.
First, the training is great. I’m not, and have never been a runner, but feel great and am about to run a 5K after finishing every other training session. Story is good, obviously a starter, but great for anyone into podcasts or audiobooks. I did run into some bugs though - not all my runs would sync with Activity app until I reinstalled the app and occasionally the app would lose its place in the story. I restarted a workout because of this and now didn’t get credit for my Week 8 Workout 2 even though it shows up in my run logs. Overall, highly recommended and definitely trying the regular app.
